Do you have a security background and want to apply your leadership skills? Join our Protective Force team at Sandia! We¿re currently seeking a Protective Force Lieutenant/Shift Supervisor for Center 09237 to lead and support our team.
The selected candidate for this position should be an experienced, proactive, highly motivated individual who can guide and direct the day-to-day Shift activities of the Protective Force Security Police Officers while reporting to a Shift Captain.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Respond to alarms and implement compensatory measures for identified vulnerabilities in the system.
- Lead represented Protective Force personnel.
- Implement operational procedures in accordance with Department of Energy (DOE)/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) orders, directives, and operational needs.
- Respond to emergency/non-emergency security incidents in collaboration with Kirtland Airforce Base (KAFB), Emergency Management and local law enforcement.
- Conduct first responder scene assessments, support SNL internal resources, support emergency security response activities within SNL internal resources/stakeholders/personnel and assist in returning the facility and/or operation to a normal operating condition.
- Effectively collaborate with a multitude of customers and all levels of management to include DOE, NNSA, and Sandia Field Office (SFO).
- Maintain requirements as prescribed by DOE O 473.2A and CFR requirements.
- At the direction of protective force management, implement policies and procedures and monitor the effectiveness and performance of security forces, where related to the armed protection of the site.
- Maintain proficiency in firearms and non-lethal force options through regular training and adhere to strict safety protocols.
- This 24/7/365 position partners with Emergency Management, Kirkland Air Force Base (KAFB) {Kirtland Fire Emergency Services (KFES) and KAFB Security Forces}, FBI, corporate investigations, NA-70, and other affected agencies for security incident notifications and reporting, and security incident management and coordination of emergency and non-emergency security activities and ensures the implementation and coordination of appropriate emergency security plans, procedures, processes, and checklists in accordance with Federal laws, and Department of Energy orders, directives and guidance (DOE Order 473.2A and CFR requirements).
- The selected candidate must be willing to maintain physical fitness requirements, work onsite and up to 16 hours a day, including off-hours, weekends, holidays, and in harsh weather conditions.
*Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100%.
Salary Range:
$74,700 - $123,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, plus five (5) years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. (AS+9 or no degree+13).
- Leadership experience, such as current/previous Protective Force Operations, law enforcement, or Military experience.
Must currently have TRF-100 certification.
- Must have a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire:
- Three (3) years of relevant experience which may include Security activities such as law enforcement, SWAT, SRT, or Military operations.
- Basic working knowledge of ES&H safety requirements.
- Leadership experience including writing, communications, facilitation, critical thinking and organizational skills.
- Ability to exercise initiative with minimal direction and or supervision, be self-motivated, and work in a team-oriented environment.
Willingness to work in harsh or inclement weather conditions.
- Familiarity with the following S&S fields: Protective Force Operations, Physical Security, Technical Security, Vulnerability Assessment, Performance Assurance.
- Ability to work with sensitive and or classified information.
About Our Team:
The Safeguards and Security Protective Force Department at Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico (SNL/NM) is responsible for the Protection of resources, including Special Nuclear Material (SNM), Classified Matter, personnel, locks, keys and combination control.The Protective Force department is also responsible for emergency response assistance and basic law enforcement activities at SNL/NM.

Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
