What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a motivated Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Engineer to contribute to the testing and analysis of a wide array of electronic components, subassemblies and systems with a focus on advanced development and system qualification. The successful candidate will have a passion for solving difficult technical problems, as well as a dedication to providing outstanding service in the national interest.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Determine EMI/EMC requirements for systems in development based on customer inputs, the intended mission and associated use environments.
- Develop verification strategies to ensure that designs meet defined EMI/EMC requirements.
- Write documents, control plans, test procedures, and reports as needed.
- Troubleshoot EMI issues from board to system level.
- Operate a variety of EMI, RF and electronics test equipment.
- Team with project leads, hardware designers, and product realization teams.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 80% of the time.
Salary Range:
$117,500 - $235,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.¿
- Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire:
The ideal R&D S&E Microwave and Sensor Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
- Laboratory skills and knowledge of RF and digital test equipment.
- Knowledge of RF, Digital Communications, Electronic Warfare, and Cyber Security systems and principles.
- Ability to work successfully in a dynamic, interdisciplinary, teaming environment.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- Ability to set-up and execute EMI-EMC tests per MIL-STD-461
- Experience in fast-paced test environment working with flight hardware.
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting EMI/EMC events from board to system level.
- TEMPEST testing and/or a willingness to become TEMPEST trained.
- Fundamental knowledge of ESD, survivability and TEMPEST design techniques.
- Attention to detail with outstanding work efficiency and accuracy.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and teamwork skills.
- Experience managing work within an EMI test laboratory including leading others and planning work.
About Our Team:
We have researched and developed new monitoring systems and technologies for over half a century. Building on that legacy, today we support national security missions involving nuclear proliferation detection, treaty monitoring, arms control, and various needs within the national security communities.
In organization 6784 we are responsible for the development, qualification and delivery of high reliability sensor and power subsystems for National Security customers. We provide EMI and ESD characterization and qualification testing along with design for EMC guidance. The department also has design and product realization responsibility for one of the subsystems in the Global Burst Detector (GBD) satellite payload and associated test systems.
We are also leading the design team for Mobile Guardian Transport (MGT), which will assure the safety and security of cargo and containers, protect the public, meet nuclear explosive safety requirements associated with accident scenarios and reduce the risk to new security threats. The MGT is a highly complex system with demanding safety, security, and technical performance requirements.
