Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Information Technology Services (ITS) and Chief Information Officer (CIO), the Director of Enterprise Systems is a vital member of the ITS Senior Leadership team. This role provides strategic and operational leadership for much of Binghamton University's centralized information technology infrastructure, as well as the people, projects and processes that surround critical IT services.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong track record of leading and mentoring diverse technical teams in the support and management of large-scale enterprise systems. It is important that they have a deep familiarity and working knowledge across technologies such as: Linux, Windows Server, Active Directory, VMWare, cloud services (e.g., Azure and AWS), major databases (Oracle, MS SQL, MySQL), and authentication methods (SSO/MFA).
The Director will guide a team of staff, overseeing environments that support:
Infrastructure: Server operations (physical/virtual), VMWare, cloud services (AWS/Azure), storage, and backup systems.
Core Services: Account management, Active Directory, Google Workspace, Single Sign-On, and Multi-Factor Authentication.
Business Applications: Centralized university business systems such as Banner and Database Environments.
Leadership and Strategic Responsibilities
These responsibilities are at the core of the Director's role:
Working with the ITS Project Management Office to implement good project management practices within Enterprise Systems. Provide oversight for projects and keep stakeholders informed of the status of key projects.
Working with other Enterprise Systems leadership and analysts to develop a technological strategy for services provided by Enterprise Systems. Ensure this strategy aligns with broader University goals and direction.
Embracing good maintenance and support practices, both on behalf of systems and the user community.
Working with other units within ITS to implement good change management and problem management practices. Ensure both operational and technological changes are well-communicated both internally and externally.
Departmental Management Duties
The Director will be responsible for departmental management duties, such as:
Working closely with the Division Budget Manager to maintain the Enterprise Systems budget, including the development of appropriate lifecycle replacement plans.
Managing vendor contracts, including the negotiation of terms and renewals.
Working with the Assistant Director for ITS Administration on employee hiring (searches), onboarding, and offboarding.
Supporting employee growth through training and networking opportunities.
Collaboration
Collaboration is key to the success of the Director of Enterprise Systems:
Work closely with other Directors, Assistant Directors, and distributed IT professionals to plan and support centralized systems technology and applications.
Serve on ITS and University-level working groups for Information Technology and other University initiatives.
Reporting to the Director, three Assistant Directors provide group-level leadership to a dynamic, talented group of Analysts within Enterprise Systems.
Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems/Sciences, or a related field
Minimum of five years of relevant supervisory experience, including building, integrating, and maintaining systems infrastructure and related software environments
Proven proficiency in managing a large, diverse technology infrastructure environment
Ability to interpret and apply technical configuration specifications for servers, server operating systems, networked data storage, and disaster recovery systems
Experience working in a large, complex organization, including staff onboarding and training, and developing and maintaining budgets
Demonstrated ability to work in and build a team environment
Ability to deal with ambiguity in a changing business environment
Preferred:
Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems/Science, or a related field
Experience working in a higher education or research environment
Experience in planning and implementing hardware lifecycle replacement plans
Experience working with Ellucian Banner Student systems
Experience with an Enterprise Identity and Access Management System
