What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking an R&D Computer Scientist to join a team that operates next-generation high performance computing (HPC) Architectures and develops innovative solutions for administration, management, and improved utilization. Your work will enhance the effectiveness of vitally important experimental research in support of both our national defense and broader scientific discoveries.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Explore, develop, and deploy advanced operation technologies to improve the efficacy of our HPC systems and the administrators who support them
- Support and coordinate with research and development staff to deliver functional platforms for pre-production systems.
- Craft methodologies for incorporating novel architectures into a user-friendly, production computing environment for mission needs
- Engage in all aspects of the HPC system lifecycle including facility integration, standup, acceptance testing, performance bench marking, operational monitoring and support, upgrades, and reclamation
- Perform all aspects of security, networking, filesystems, system software installation, and user support work.Troubleshoot software and hardware and replace defective components.

Salary Range:
$114,000 - $227,500
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Masters or PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems Engineering (CIS/MIS) or other relevant computing-focused degree plus 5 years of experience; or equivalent.
- Included in the experience above, at least one of the following:
- Four years as a postdoctoral researcher
- Five years of experience with high performance computing (HPC) systems based on Linux / Unix operating systems
- Four years of experience with neuromorphic computing architectures
- DOE Q or DOD equivalent security clearance required to start.
Qualifications We Desire:
- Experience with configuration management technologies such as Ansible or Terraform
- Experience with cloud infrastructure and container technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, or Singularity
- Experience with creating and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
- Experience with machine learning paradigms and software like PyTorch and TensorFlow
- Experience with Python, C, and/or FORTRAN programming languages
- Strong communication skills and experience working in team environment
About Our Team:
The High Performance Computing (HPC) Development Department develops innovative solutions for the operation and efficient utilization of leading and next-generation computing systems across the world. Our Heterogeneous Advanced Architecture Testbeds (HAAPs) are used to evaluate advanced processors and accelerators for next generation platforms. Our Advanced Technology Systems support R&D necessary for extreme-scale application runs. These in-house systems enable our department to develop infrastructure and system management and analytical techniques capabilities for advanced and diverse computing architectures. The work is funded under the Advanced Simulation Computing program at Sandia which provides state-of-the-art computer simulations capabilities for the NNSA and revolutionizes the way a large number of innovative products are engineered.

Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
