Job Description
Posting Context StatementThe Weed Science Research Associate will provide support for the weed science program in conducting research on herbicide resistance screening and weed management practices for row crop and forage production systems in southern Idaho. Research will be conducted primarily in alfalfa, corn, dry beans, small grains, and sugar beet.
Position Overview
Performs research activities and analysis; implements and evaluates research procedures and data. Records observations and measurements then reports results. Responsible for analyzing and preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision with a certain degree of creativity and latitude. May supervise junior research personnel.
Duties may include:
Provide technical support in planning and/or designing of scientific projects, studies, or applications
Plan and conduct research and analysis of scientific data
Interpret test results and comparing with determined standards and limits
Identify and evaluating scientific samples and determining need for further testing
Develop recommendations and/or providing solutions, standards, and protocol to a wide range of difficult problems
Plan, design, develop, monitor and/or evaluate portions of a scientific project, study, or application
Provide scientific evaluations/assessments
Research, implement, standardize, and evaluate new procedures
Maintain detailed records of results and prepares written reports acceptable to the Principal Investigator and funding agencies

Position Qualifications
Required Experience
Two years of post-bachelor’s research experience related to the domain of this position
Required Education
Bachelor’s Degree in weed science, crop science, agronomy, plant science, or range management
Required Other
Valid driver’s license and ability to meet requirements for driving university vehicles
Hold or be able to obtain an Idaho Pesticide Applicator’s License within 6 months of hire
Additional Preferred
Master’s degree in weed science, crop science, agronomy, plant science, or range management.
Experience with verbal communication.
Experience with small plot field research, experimental design, data collection and analysis.
Experience in the operation of farm equipment such as tractors, sprayers, and hand tools.
Experience with herbicide and pesticide application and the calibration of pesticide applicators.
Experience using computer software and applications for word processing, developing spreadsheets, email and internet
Proficiency in using R or similar analytical statistics software and ARM trial management software.
Experience in effective written communication skills.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
May be required to work with toxic, volatile and corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances
May be required to work in adverse environmental conditions (dusty, hot, or cold conditions outdoors)
Must be able to lift, carry and/or otherwise move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
Degree Requirement Listed degree qualification is required at time of application
