Job Description

  • Performs research toward discovering new knowledge about mechanical and civil engineering systems, components, products and processes, and applies that knowledge to create new and improved advanced engineered products, processes, systems, and components.

  • Designs and analyzes advanced mechanical and civil engineered systems, equipment, and components for R&D projects.

  • Conducts feasibility studies and tests new and modified designs.

  • Conducts design and development of systems and components in such areas as mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, thermodynamic, vibration, physical metallurgy, power engineering, kinematics, heat transfer, civil/structural, and seismic systems.

  • Applies knowledge to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

  • Applies knowledge to the planning, design, development, and testing of civil, structural, and/or seismic systems, instruments, controls, buildings and/or structures.

  • Analyzes ability of systems and structures to withstand stress imposed by conditions such as temperature, loads, motion, and vibration.

  • Oversees construction; compiles and analyzes test data to determine effect of design on machines in relation to factors such as temperature, pressures, speed, horsepower, and fuel consumption; oversees the fabrication, installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of such equipment; analyzes engineering sketches, specifications and related data and drawings to determine design factors such as size, shape, and arrangement of parts. Analyzes equipment failures to determine cause and recommends corrective action.

Position Requirements

  • Responsible for day-to-day activities associated with the APS Linac, Particle Accumulator Ring, the Booster/Synchrotron, Storage Ring, Front Ends, RF cavities, and Beamlines vacuum systems.

  • Ability to manage the operations, maintenance of the associated controls and diagnostics systems, Pneumatic systems for Safety and Photon Shutters, and hutch doors operations and maintenance.

  • Experience with the operation of precision advanced welding machines (Acuwelds).

  • Ability to inform the designs, fabrication, and installation of various accelerator vacuum components.

  • Ability to design, install, operate, and maintain pneumatic systems that control vacuum equipment, safety shutters, radiation stops and define their interface with other groups.

  • Knowledge of PLC systems design, operations, and maintenance.

  • Knowledge of pneumatic systems design, operations, and maintenance

  • Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory.
