What Your Job Will Be Like:

Do you want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for national security? We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design, develop and qualify flight hardware, as well as perform environments testing and analysis. You will join a department that designs, develops, tests, integrates, and fields advanced concept systems for missile defense applications to address national defense needs. In addition to hardware design and development, you will assist in performing wide-ranging analyses of aerospace systems for internal and external customers. The successful candidate will need to be self-directed, highly self-motivated, innovative, organized, and possess well-developed interpersonal communications skills. The work is very fast-paced and involves extensive interactions with other Sandia organizations, multiple components of the DoD, NNSA, MDA, other outside agencies, and private industry. Moderate travel may be required to support project meetings, reviews, and field/flight test.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop detailed understanding of customer requirements and ensure maturation of requirements for specific systems aspects or components.
  • Analyze mechanical, system, and subsystem assemblies.
  • Integrate and test subassemblies.
  • Team with experts to plan, execute and analyze data from testing.
  • Plan and execute testing for environmental, function, and safety qualification.
  • Develop system level understanding of collected data and support anomaly resolution.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite and travel frequently.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's and Master’s degree in mechanical, aerospace or other relevant STEM field, plus one (1) year experience in complex mechanical systems.
  • Experience with CREO or other MCAD tools for components or test fixtures.
  • Experience in a flight quality payload integration and test environments.
  • Experience with test plans and procedures, work instructions and mechanical flight hardware builds.
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance or equivalent.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Understanding of manufacturing processes used for precision metal parts.
  • Experience in a flight quality payload integration and test environments.
  • Component engineering experience with procurements, inspections, and review of data packages.
  • Experience with test plans and procedures, work instructions and mechanical hardware builds.
  • Demonstrated engineering intuition, critical thinking, and comfort with ambiguity.
  • Experience in design and analysis with mechanical engineering tools (e.g., Solidworks, Creo, Abaqus).
  • Working knowledge Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Experience in technical project leadership or management.
  • Excellent communication and people skills working both as a team lead and as a team member.
  • Excellent technical communication skills including the ability to; prepare and present presentations, clearly written reports, and technical work instructions.
  • Proven track record interacting with diverse teams.

About Our Team:

Sandia National Labs Department 5415 (Advanced Concepts and Mission Payloads) supports the missions of Integrated Military Systems with innovative concept development and revolutionary technology demonstrations supporting Sandia's contributions to the Missile Defense Program for our nation and allies. This includes engagement through advanced technology development of innovative countermeasures, future integrated target systems, and mod/sim in support of architecture and mission analysis. This is performed through active interfacing with multiple Sandia organizations and external agencies to include the Missile Defense Agency and other DoD agencies.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
