The LPN Wound Care & Hyperbaric Technologist is responsible for providing quality hyperbaric tech and nursing services. You will maintain oversight of all scheduling and daily operation of HBO chambers and the HBO suite and is responsible for the safe and effective operation of hyperbaric chambers and related equipment. You will  also performs quality patient care in the outpatient wound center to patients with chronic wounds in collaboration with and under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the quality of patient care services rendered in the hyperbaric unit and ensures that it meets current standards of practice.
  • Collects assessment data for assigned patients.
  • Assist in the coordination of hyperbaric staff and patients.
  • Promotes delivery of quality patient care.
  • Ensure adequate staffing of HBO suite.
  • Provide patient and family education as needed related to hyperbaric treatment as well as wound care.
  • Communicates and collaborates with nursing and medical staff to assure coordination of patients care.
  • Communicates patient care issues, unit issues, and other significant situations to the director, or other appropriate administrator in a timely manner.
  • Assists patients in preparation for treatment.
  • Assists in monitoring/data collection of unit based QI program under the direction of the registered nurse.
  • Performs patient care pre-treatment and post-treatment assessments in HBO .
  • Follow all protocols and treatments as ordered.
  • Maintain visual contact with patient for the full course of HBO treatment.
  • Perform wound care as directed by physician.
  • Ensure all documentation necessary for insurance has been provided to the hospital and is on file in the HBO suite and/or Wound Center.
  • Completes nursing assignment on patients admitted for Wound Center including assessment and implementation of care.
  • Order tests and cultures as directed by physician.
  • Work with physician(s) to ensure all required documentation and clearances have been performed prior to starting HBO treatment.
  • Must document all care keeping complete and accurate patient records as they pertain to assessment and treatment.
  • Documents patient visit in Wound Center’s EMR per policy.
  • Reports to the registered nurse changes in condition, symptoms and reactions of patients in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Perform Infections control tasks as necessary.
  • Ensure that treatment chambers are clean and disinfected using only approved cleaners.
  • Perform hyperbaric chamber operations and system maintenance/inspections daily/weekly/as needed/as required.
  • Ensure supplies and linens are ordered in a timely manner so that hyperbaric operations are not disrupted - noting special requirements for HBO linens must be at least 50% cotton.
  • Work in Conjunction with medical Director and Safety Director to ensure an ongoing and effective safety program.
  • Support Clinical hyperbaric facility accreditation.
  • May be required to serve as Safety Director.
  • Assists in orientation of LPNs to Wound Center and Hyperbaric Unit.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Follows Hospital and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of ID badge, and safety.
  • Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department-specific competencies and requirements.

Education:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of practical nursing.
  • Successful completion of at least the 40 credit hour Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society (UHMS) or American College of Hyperbaric Medicine (ACHM) approved introduction to Hyperbaric Medicine course within 60 days of employment.

Certifications:

  • Current license to practice as a practical nurse in the State of Ohio (LPN).
  • Drug certified (Intravenous) by a program approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing.
  • Certified Hyperbaric Technician (CHT) preferred or
  • (ICHT) International Certified Hyperbaric Technologist preferred or
  • Certified Hyperbaric Specialist preferred.
  • Current BLS

Complexity of Work:

  • Maintains competencies specific to patient population served.
  • Skill in interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations.
  • Ability to use computer for documentation and EMR.

Work Experience:

  • Have a working knowledge of all applicable hyperbaric safety codes, compression/decompression procedures, and Hyperbaric supervision, patient qualification, necessary medical necessity documentation and coding.
  • Wound care experience preferred.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
