Job Description

The Materials Science Division (MSD) is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to join a multidisciplinary team developing electrodeposition processes geared towards decarbonization and sustainability of steel industry. Under the guidance of a supervisor, the postdoctoral appointee will perform fundamental research to understand the room/mild temperature electrodeposition processes of transition metals in aqueous and non-aqueous media.

The candidate will use a combination of in-house capabilities (e.g., electrodeposition system, scanning electron microscopy), X-ray based tools (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction), and advanced characterization at Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source (APS) and Center for Nano Materials (CNM). Project activities assigned to the postdoctoral researcher not only includes understanding the electrodeposition processes, but also includes applying electrochemical engineering principles to control and improve deposit morphology, quality, and process efficiency.

As a part of this team, you will:

  • Perform electrodeposition experiments and electroanalytical measurements to advance the technical understanding and application of transition metal electrodeposition.

  • Apply electrochemical principles to develop room/mild temperature electrodeposition processes for transition metals.

  • Develop and test new materials and cell configurations.

  • Develop technical ideas and proposals to advance the application of electrochemistry.

  • Assess and improve process efficiency, monitoring, and product quality and recovery.

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and Laboratory management through status updates, technical research reports, project presentations, and other regular channels.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science with 0 to 2 years of experience, or the equivalent experience through practical application in a laboratory.

  • Skill in devising and performing experiments to acquire identified data, using and maintaining research equipment, compiling, evaluating, and reporting test results.

  • Knowledge of and experience with electrochemistry.

  • Knowledge of and experience with scanning/transmission electron microscopies (SEM, TEM).

  • Skills in oral and written communication with a record of publication and external recognition

  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with electrodeposition of transition metals.

  • Experience with synchrotron X-ray based measurements to probe structure and growth mechanism.
