Job Description

Summary

The Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) provides for the care, health and well-being of all research animals used in the pursuit of scientific achievement and excellence at Baylor College of Medicine. CCM provides the highest quality veterinary and animal care and acts as a resource for the faculty on veterinary and scientific issues relating to the use of laboratory animals. We are seeking a Training Specialist to perform under minimal supervision. This position conducts husbandry skill training, assessment, re-trainings as required, and completes additional training duties as assigned while also providing classroom and hands-on training during new hire on-boarding for CCM animal care staff.

This position is 100% in office.

Job Duties

  • Assists with on-boarding duties for CCM new hires.
  • Provides hands-on instruction in animal husbandry for new and current CCM employees.
  • Provides training (or re-training) on skills that include, but are not limited to, husbandry duties, animal handling & restraint, species-specific procedures, & specialized area (immunodeficient, biological & chemical hazard, etc.) procedures.
  • Facilitates training via hands on instruction, technical demonstration in the vivarium, audio or video presentations or group discussion.
  • Provides assessment after completion of animal husbandry training to assist in evaluation of training effectiveness and achievement of learning outcomes.
  • Utilizes previously developed curricula and materials in support of training objectives.
  • Organizes training materials and environments, including spaces, equipment, handouts, presentations, new hire handbook or other visuals.
  • Maintains record of training activities & husbandry training calendar.
  • Utilizes learning management systems to track training acknowledgment records.
  • Assists in developing and conducting continuing education programs for CCM employees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Four years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certificate.
  • Previous research and/or animal care and handling experience.
