The Department of English in the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oklahoma invites applications for an advanced Assistant or Associate Professor of Technical and Scientific Writing to begin Fall 2024. Because this is an area of growth for us and the scholar will serve as our Director of Technical Writing, we seek a colleague with an established record of publication and teaching. We welcome expertise in one or more of the following subareas: Medical Communication, Environmental Rhetoric, UX, Data Analysis, Social Media Studies, Digital Humanities, and/or the Rhetoric of Science. We are particularly interested in scholars who study how race, ethnicity, gender, disability, and/or sexuality impact and are impacted by these topics.

The selected candidate will direct English 3153: Technical Writing, a course annually taken by approximately 230 STEM majors, across 12 synchronous and asynchronous sections. Duties include the following: overseeing instructors, evaluating teaching effectiveness, updating the curriculum, and offering a biennial graduate seminar to train new teachers.

The University of Oklahoma's department of English houses one of the nation’s oldest rhetoric and writing programs; the successful applicant will join this thriving program as well as contribute to interdisciplinary curricular efforts, including a joint certificate in Science Writing with the School of Geosciences currently being developed. Our majors, minors, and graduate students frequently are hired in the fields of the following: Grant Writing, Technical Writing, Digital Development (e.g., game design), Web Design, and User Experience Research; we hope our new colleague will further such professionalization.

The position is a full-time, nine-month appointment with a standard teaching assignment of two courses per semester. Faculty teach a balance of courses for undergraduate majors, graduate students, and non-majors completing the University of Oklahoma's General Education requirements. The Department of English offers MA and PhD degrees in Literary & Cultural Studies (LCS) and Rhetoric & Writing Studies (RWS).

Required qualifications include a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition or an allied field and an established record of scholarship in technical and/or scientific writing.
