Summary

A full-time lab manager position is available in the Gao Laboratory at BCM Department of Neuroscience. The Gao Lab studies diverse cellular mechanisms of neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions using cutting-edge tools in proteomics, protein engineering, high-throughput electrophysiology, and mouse models. The lab manager will oversee operations for a new lab of growing size, demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, take responsibility for lab personnel management and training, and ensure safety and regulatory requirements are met. The position is also expected to be well-integrated into daily research activities.

Job Duties

  • Oversee the operation of a newly established lab at BCM Neuroscience Department, and assist in personnel management of a small and growing team. 
  • Generic lab managing duties include preparing financial reports, quoting, ordering, and receiving lab supplies, budgeting, expenditure monitoring, assisting travel arrangements for lab members, and reconciling invoices and receipts.
  • Maintain a safe and positive lab environment. 
  • Assist SOP development and operation, lab personnel safety training, hazardous material management, and regulatory compliance (IACUC, IBC, and/or IRB).
  • Serve as biosafety officer for the laboratory. Identify and resolve potential issues that could affect lab operation. 
  • Assist in training new lab members with common techniques, standard procedures, and animal handling. 
  • Serve as training ambassador for animal procedures. 
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions and arrange service calls for equipment. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Five years of relevant experience, with prior supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Animal handling
  • Mouse husbandry and standard mouse procedures such as injection and tissue collection
  • Indepth knowledge of laboratory safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Plasmid purification, genotyping, cell/neuron culture, and aseptic techniques.
