Position Summary

Each member of the Office of Philanthropy is a stakeholder in this work, with personal accountability for their role in building a successful future.

As a member of the Philanthropy Leadership Team, the Assistant Vice President, will help ensure the fundraising success of the Office of Philanthropy through a number of executive-level responsibilities. This effort is in keeping with the shared vision of the Preparing Our People initiative to prepare our office for the rigors of a campaign, and to realize our vision of excelling as a highly collaborative, efficient, and creative team.

By providing expertise and executive leadership over City of Hope’s Peer to Peer Fundraising, Third Party fundraising, and Affinity and Legacy groups, this AVP will be a partner in creating our vision of being known institutionally and nationally as a model of excellence among elite fundraising programs.

Specifically, this position is responsible for building, leading, growing and stewarding a national donor program consisting of affinity and legacy groups, 3rd party efforts, , and national and signature events—with the goals being to raise direct revenue and fuel our national individual donor pipeline. This program will build on City of Hope’s rich, 100+ year old history of national outreach to donors. The ANE program will be highly integrated with City of Hope’s individual donor pipeline efforts. These efforts are focused on identifying individuals who are interested in financially contributing to advance COH’s critical work in cancer and diabetes research as well as this a model of compassionate care that can inform institutions world-wide.

The AVP participates as an active member of the Office of Philanthropy Leadership Team and contributes to cross departmental dialogue and projects. Serves as a role model for Office of Philanthropy team members, leading the creation of a forward-thinking culture and its associated change management. Provides strategic insight and guidance regarding Office of Philanthropy fundraising programs/priorities.

Key Responsibilities include:

Lead the unit in reaching and advancing its goals in developing a donor-centric, synergistic, efficient and highly effective national fundraising program includes:

  • Build and advance strategy to advance COH national donor outreach through key channels: Affinity groups and Legacy chapters; 3rd party efforts; National and Signature vents; and Corporate Employee Giving.
  • Analyze and implement integrated programs for each channel that ensure cost effectiveness while maximizing philanthropic returns and individual prospect identification.
  • Working with Philanthropy Marketing and Communications, Legal, and other key COH areas in ensuring legal and brand-compliance. Preserve and advance the brand and reputation of City of Hope.
  • Working with AVP of Annual Giving (Direct Mail), Operations and Finance, to ensure data integrity and integration into CRM.
  • Work with select volunteers do build a national program identity, including a potential national volunteer council.
  • Working with Individual Giving to provide prospects for individual donor prospect pipeline.
  • Meet annual activity and financial performance metrics.

Managing the unit: Lead the team with a focus on accountability, best practices, and collaboration. The incumbent will demonstrate an ability to motivate staff toward adherence to key performance indicators and to maintain a productive, highly collaborative and integrated culture. Includes:

  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with City of Hope faculty and staff to support fundraising initiatives for COH priorities.
  • Oversee management of staff and act as mentor for all content and professional development areas. Includes serving as a resource in developing strategies, conducting ongoing conversations regarding performance in relation to metrics, and articulating opportunities for employees’ growth and professional development in a thoughtful manner.
  • Demonstrate an ability to solve problems, overcome hurdles, and navigate sensitive issues with discretion, tact, and strong communication skills.
  • Provide leadership throughout employees’ tenure, from interviewing and making thoughtful hiring decisions, and providing foundational onboarding to new employees, to ensuring high employee retention within the Office of Philanthropy.
  • Possess thorough knowledge of the key fund-raising priorities for COH.
  • Responsible for fiduciary accounting of the funds raised through these campaigns.
  • Responsible for department oversight and ensuring a positive working relationship between other City of Hope Departments and employees. Position includes direct
  • oversight of employees and the management of a work team that is integrated into the larger fund-raising and pipeline development effort
  • Responsible for meeting established performance goals for ANE.

Serve as a role model for the Office of Philanthropy. Includes:

  • Act as spokesperson for City of Hope activities as requested.
  • Serve as a valued and valuable member of the Philanthropy Leadership Team.
  • Participate in search committees, task forces, and other special projects.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s in business, philanthropy or related field.
  • Experience may substitute for minimum education requirements.
  • 15+ years in fund raising, development, or related field in non-profit environment. Experience in a complex medical or academic development setting encouraged. Demonstrated understanding of social media outlets and public facing events required. Experience in managing volunteer-led fundraising programs, including those in national regions, is essential. Minimum 5-7 years supervisory experience of at least 5 employees required.

Preferred Certification/Licensure:

  • CFRE

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Candidate must have significant experience working with a range of volunteers and proven success in delivering quality ROI from revenues via volunteer platforms.
  • Candidate must easily be able to navigate a wide variety of social and business settings and enjoy taking the message of City of Hope to individuals and organizations that are not yet familiar with its work. Previous experience in working with survivors and their families would be helpful to candidate.
