Job DescriptionBidder Eligibility: This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. Employees must remain in their current position for one year before applying for a new position, with the exception of student interns. Application of this requirement will not supersede collective bargaining agreements. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs: If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs. If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date. What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a hardworking and dedicated Postdoctoral Appointee in the Water Power Technologies Department. You will work both independently and with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists. We work on hydrodynamic modeling, work to develop and support open-source software packages, validate computer simulations with field/experimental data, and document work through peer-review publications. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Work alongside a multidisciplinary team including interns and senior engineers + Devise and implement hydrodynamic models + Support development of hydrodynamic modeling tools + Conduct and validate computer simulations/modeling codes with field/experimental data + Communicate research results effectively through written, oral, and other creative media methods The selected applicant can be a virtual worker located in any U.S. State or District of Columbia. Regular or periodic travel to your assigned work location may be required that may include New Mexico, New Hampshire and other locations. Qualifications We Require: + PhD in an engineering-related field or similar STEM discipline + Ability to travel occasionally domestically + Ability to access High Performance Computing (HPC) and site resources at Sandia National Laboratories + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Proficiency in MATLAB; Python; FORTRAN + Familiarity with hydrodynamic modeling techniques, e.g., Aerodyn, CACTUS and other boundary element method (BEM) models; and/or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling, e.g., Unsteady RANS modeling. + Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) + Familiarity with design optimization + Familiarity with statistical analyses + Proven ability to produce clear and succinct documentation of technical work for technical and non-technical audiences (e.g. publications and presentations). About Our Team: Sandia's Water Power Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of water power technologies. The primary focus area of the department's work is Marine Hydrokinetics (MHK) research with lower levels of effort in Offshore Wind (OW) and Hydropower. The department is responsible for all aspects of Marine Hydrokinetic device design, performance, system reliability, system integration, and environmental evaluations for the Department of Energy's Wind and Water Power Technologies Office and in collaboration with industry partners. Offshore Wind Energy activities currently include Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) design and analysis and foundation scour. Hydropower efforts focus on seasonal simulation and optimization. Through partnerships with industry, academia, other National Labs, and public dissemination of results, Sandia serves an important role in energy security for the nation
