The Solution Engineer is a member of the Research & Development (R&D) Creation Center organization.   Our mission is to help bring medicines to patients through the delivery of impactful and sustainable technology solutions for the research and development functions of Pfizer.  This is accomplished by providing the talent for technology planning, project execution, application development, and application deployment excellence. 

What You Will Achieve

Research Materials is a portfolio within Medicinal Sciences enabling the Inventory Management and Stewardship of our compound collection, and the Ordering and Order Fulfillment of that collection.  Our customers include chemists and biologists engaged in early chemical Design and Synthesis, and Analysis, as well as Sample Logistics teams using Large and Small-scale lab automation to assist in those workflow processes.

This Software/Solution Engineer (SE) role for Research Materials acts as a key technical resource for our rapidly evolving portfolio of solutions in the Research Materials area within Medicine Design.  The SE analyzes specifications, designs logic, writes code, customizes products, tests, debugs, and documents software applications.   The SE acts as a technical subject matter expert on in-house, outsourced, or co-sourced developed global applications.  With hundreds of applications within the R & D Core Solutions portfolio, there is a tremendous opportunity to learn different technologies and business areas.

As a Manager, you provide guidance to operational teams for managing projects. Your planning skills will help in preparing forecasts for resource requirements, and providing areas of improvement for products, processes or services. Through your comprehensive knowledge of principles, concepts and theories of the discipline, you will also work towards advancing new concepts and methodologies. You will be able to take a leadership role to facilitate agreements between different teams.

How You Will Achieve It

This Manager, Software/Solution Engineer role:

  • Works with project teams as an individual contributor to design, prototype, implement and unit test software solutions in support of the Research & Development organization.

  • Works as a technical lead/lead developer on medium-to-large size software development projects, which may include accountability for the work of a number of other staff and/or contract Software Engineers, as well as responsibility for dictating and managing coding standards -- coding process, source code control, versioning, etc.

  • Translates logical designs of user/system interfaces into physical designs, considering the target environment, performance requirements and existing systems.

  • Helps produce detailed design specifications where applicable, and documents all work using required standards, methods, and tools, including prototyping tools, where appropriate.

  • Conducts reviews of supplied specifications as appropriate.

  • Defines the integration build and produces a build definition for generation of the software.

  • Work in a matrix, team environment with Pfizer colleagues as well as vendor partners.

  • Dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers.

Qualifications

Must-Have

  • Applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree with at five years of relevant experience; OR Master’s degree with three years of relevant experience; OR Associate's degree with eight years of relevant experience; OR Ph.D. with 0+ years of experience; OR 10 years of relevant experience with a high school diploma or equivalent

  • Facilitation, negotiating and presentation skills

  • Experience working in ambiguous situations

  • Demonstrated experience and skills in analysis and problem solving

  • Demonstrated experience using standard requirements business analysis techniques, including brainstorming, interviewing, requirements sessions, activity diagrams and use cases desired

  • Demonstrated experience and/or demonstrated competencies either informally or formally contributing on various-size teams of technologists, IT professionals or project managers using Agile, DevOps, and other approaches for iterative development

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively in team settings, frequently in virtual teams with client partner and customer engagement responsibilities

  • Demonstrated ability to develop multi-tiered solutions in an OOP programming language, primarily Java, but could include C#, Python, et al.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand data and integration architectures to manage, transform, and exploit data across the enterprise

  • Demonstrated capability to understand security requirements, and using the frameworks and tools the organization has put in place to meet those requirements

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Nice-to-Have

  • Familiarity or ability with web technologies and frameworks such as Javascript, HTML, CSS, et al

  • Experience with Agile Software Delivery and/or Scrum Master Certification

  • Relevant pharmaceutical industry experience

  • Relevant experience in chemistry and/or biology

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

There will be occasional work on weekends to support application deployments if scheduled for that time.
