Position Summary

Respiratory therapist assists in the treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. Collects and analyzes sputum, blood and breathing specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Administers treatment prescribed by a physician for the care of patients with abnormalities associated with the process of breathing. Performs technical work in the application of respiratory therapy procedures and protocols. Interacts with physicians, nurses and others to facilitate and promote optimal patient care.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Sets up equipment and medications and administers respiratory treatment as ordered bythe physician; charts treatment, response, and progress.
  • Observes patients, checks equipment, and makes changes as necessary during patientrounds.
  • Records observations and services and completes patient records.
  • Responds and assists with basic life support in cardio-pulmonary resuscitationemergencies.
  • Participates in fire, safety and other training programs conducted within and outside ofthe medical center. Maintains current CPR card.
  • Performs EKGs and arterial blood gases.
  • Maintains established department policies, procedures, objectives, and quality assurancesafety.
  • Assesses and documents patients’ condition on ventilators to include ETT tube placement,cuff pressure (if appropriate), breath sounds, respiratory effort, color and any notedtreads in secretion, pressures, etc.
  • Assesses and documents patients who are receiving respiratory treatments prior to andafter treatment.
  • Assesses and provides patient and family education for every patient who received initialtreatment, 02 therapy, procedure, or placed on ventilator. Evaluates patient’s or familymembers’ responses on the new interdisciplinary patient and family education flow sheet.
  • Accesses medications from medication room within scope of practice and according toproper protocol. Access in automated medication dispensing cabinets will limit access tocertain drugs.
  • Assists in monitoring compliance with quality assurance standards in related field ofexpertise.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educationalprograms, current literature, workshops, and In-service meetings, etc.
  • Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies. Ensuresupplies are ordered timely. Report any equipment malfunction, ensure equipment istagged and out of service till repaired.
  • Teach one education offering yearly to own department or with in organization.
  • Involved in one performance process within department to improve outcomes.
  • Assist with scheduling staff or coverage for sick calls
  • Help and support role out of new technology or workflow processes.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • As required for certification and licensure
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) required.
  • 5 years Respiratory Therapist experience.

Req. Certification/Licensure:

  • California Respiratory Care Practitioner license (RCP)
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) American Heart Association

Pref. Certification/Licensure:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

Pay Rate: $39.66 - $59.50 / hour
