Position Summary:
The Director, Data & Analytics position contributes to this vision by participating in key processes and programs that sustain an office-wide focus on collaboration, efficiencies and metrics-based outcomes. Through individual contribution, the Director will be a part of creating our evolution into a perpetually campaign-ready, donor-centered, leading industry program to support City of Hope’s mission. The Director, Data & Analytics plays a key role as a leader on the team. Under their supervisor’s direction, the Director, Data & Analytics will serve as the lead data steward for the department and lead all data management efforts in collaboration with the Information Solutions and other OoP departments. The incumbent will develop an in-depth knowledge of the department data management processes relative to fundraising and/or marketing, as well as an understanding of the CRM data infrastructure (AccessHope) and the Office of Philanthropy business rules. Incumbent will work independently to create and maintain queries, assist in maintaining data integrity, and/or perform marketing data analysis. In addition, the incumbent will work in partnership with Information Solutions colleagues to develop and validate reports and/or models.
The Director, Data & Analytics will have a working knowledge of the fundraising and department fundamentals, possess a demonstrated ability to develop and provide complex reports, and is expected to stay apprised of current technologies relative to data management and reporting solutions. In collaboration with Information Solutions colleagues, the Director, Data & Analytics will support fundraising and/or marketing efforts through the development of specialized reports, such as progress toward financial goals, gift reports, program reports and analysis of key performance indicators. The incumbent will also perform data analysis and assist in developing predictive data models to identify trends.
The incumbent may manage data and develop queries related to the department marketing program and oversee the coordination of marketing fulfillment efforts, including coordinating with vendors and staff to ensure all aspects of marketing fulfillment are managed in an efficient and timely manner.
A successful candidate will be analytically-minded with an aptitude for data and technology as well as the tenacity to solve problems. This position also interfaces with other professionals and works in a collaborative fashion to advance departmental needs and initiatives as well as the overall goals of the Office of Philanthropy.
The Director, Data & Analytics will provide oversight of the documentation of processes and procedures and assist in training staff as needed.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to the Department program reaching its annual performance goals through the effective management of data to support fundraising and/or marketing efforts, by performing the following duties:
  • Provide leadership and technical expertise in overseeing all aspects of department data management to ensure data integrity, meet reporting needs, perform data analysis and develop queries.
  • May oversee marketing fulfillment efforts, particularly with respect to data management, including management of the documentation of marketing efforts and tracking responses in the CRM; review of creative briefs to prepare mailing list segmentations and reconcile all data for each marketing effort. Periodically may re-assess and refine processes to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Utilize system data and relevant dashboards to provide appropriate information to other departments or officers.
  • Create and/or run reports and queries to support fundraising, metrics, prospect management and/or marketing efforts; create and manage queries in AccessHope to efficiently pull data.
  • Develop an intimate knowledge of the Office of Philanthropy and department business practices and processes, including documentation of gift, prospect management and constituent information in the CRM. Provide guidance to staff on business practices.
  • Provide input from a department perspective to Information Solutions colleagues on large-scale data mapping and reporting projects.
  • Prepare and analyze specialized management reports/dashboards, i.e. completed gifts reports, program reports in partnership with Information Solutions colleagues to facilitate the development of reports/dashboards.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to understand both business problems and/or marketing requirements and recommend solid business solutions supported by data and a detailed and thorough knowledge of AccessHope database functionality.
  • Represent department on cross-departmental teams formed for the development, testing and implementation of new initiatives related to AccessHope and/or involving outside data sources, information overlays, modeling, forecasting, trend analysis or system development. Responsible for extracting, compiling and summarizing large volumes of data from disparate sources, and influences business decisions through recommendations.
  • Responsible for recommending business solutions to the senior management team through clear communication of analysis, including approach, methods, and results.
  • Serve as a liaison with Information Solutions colleagues and participate in joint department/Information Solutions meetings. Collaborate on a regular basis with key Information Solutions team members.
  • Perform data analysis and assist in developing data models:
  • In partnership with department, Information Solutions colleagues and/or outside vendors, as needed:
  • Identify areas of opportunity for predictive modeling to enhance or streamline fundraising and/or marketing efforts.
  • Develop predictive data models.
  • Develop new reports/dashboards as appropriate to further assess trends and key performance indicators of the department.
  • Innovation and Professional Development:
  • Keep current with the latest trends and developments in the field through reading, webinars, conferences, or other educational offerings.
  • Continually work to refine and expand existing areas of expertise and explore opportunities to acquire new skills/knowledge.
  • Participate in brainstorming, ideation and solutioning activities.
  • Propose ideas for increasing efficiency and effectiveness, iterative process improvements and novel ways of working.
  • Approach problem-solving with “outside-the-box” thinking and a “can-do” attitude.
  • Serve as a role model for the Office of Philanthropy. Includes:
  • Build sustainable relationships and trust with key stakeholders across the Office of Philanthropy.
  • Act as spokesperson for City of Hope activities as requested.
  • Participate in meetings, search committees, task forces, and other special projects.
  • Maintains a positive image when dealing with executive staff, donors, prospects, fundraisers and other City of Hope employees.
  • Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Business, Computer Science or related discipline.
  • 9 years of experience plus 1 years of experience in a leadership capacity can be accepted in lieu of the degree requirement
  • 5 years of business analysis, database and/or data management experience with a background in working with large volumes of data or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience developing reports and queries using SQL or comparable tools.
  • Prior experience interfacing with both technical and non-technical staff at various levels, particularly business executives and professionals.
  • 1+ years of management/leadership experience.

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Strong knowledge of integrated database structure and associated software programs. Understanding of fundraising principles, department and marketing is desired as well as experience in a complex medical or academic development setting.
  • Experience using Blackbaud CRM or other fundraising databases. Experience with Tableau and Visio.
  • Excellent computer skills and a natural aptitude for working with data, software and technology.
