Job Description

Privacy is a fundamental human right, and at Apple, it’s also one of our core values. Your devices are important to many parts of your life. What you share from those experiences, and whom you share it with, should be up to you. We design Apple products to protect your privacy and give you control over your information. It’s not always easy. But that’s the kind of innovation we believe in. Your work will impact many intelligent system experiences that understand and anticipate your needs at a personal level, like Siri, Shortcut Suggestions, Focus Mode Suggestions, and many more.

We are building an on-device personal knowledge platform that serves as the backbone for many of our most beloved intelligent experiences like Siri. Our multi-disciplinarian team blends state-of-the-art ML research with a relentless pursuit for preserving user privacy.

We are looking for an architect and leader to design and implement new data collection programs that will allow us to acquire the data we need to train large-scale, personalized models - whilst preserving user privacy.
Key Qualifications
  • 10+ years of proven experience building large-scale systems that deal with sensitive, personal data
  • Proven experience designing and running large-scale data collection programs for machine-learning purposes
  • Industry experience in domains related to privacy, and a passion for customer privacy
  • Soft-skills and leadership are a must, experience interfacing with legal and privacy teams is a must
  • Excellent software engineer with exposure to machine learning
  • Ability to learn and research new technologies rapidly, assess them for privacy exposures, and drive changes to enhance privacy
  • Experience with recent techniques like private federated learning, differential privacy, and cryptography (like private information retrieval) is a plus
  • Experience in compiled languages like C, C++, Java, Objective-C, or Swift is a plus
In this role you will be responsible for our multi-year data acquisition strategy. This will involve defining the types of data needed for inference over a multi-year roadmap, working hand-in-hand with our privacy and legal teams to define novel data collection programs, and implementing any client-side or server-side code required to ship these data collection programs. The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about data, privacy, can reason about products and user experiences, is passionate about driving the implementation of systems, can communicate with leaders across the company, and has a great technical background as a software engineer, ML engineer, or ML scientist.
Education & Experience
Bachelors, Masters or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field.
