Position Summary

Draws blood from City of Hope patients and donors using appropriate procedures, guidelines and standards. Processes specimens for in-house / send-out laboratory testing. Works under the direction of Phlebotomy Supervisor to provide high-level support and assistance with a variety of tasks within the laboratory, including but not limited to new staff mentoring, specimen / workflow problem issue resolution, special request draws, supply ordering and procedure development. Works as part of the Clinical Pathology department team in fulfilling departmental and medical center objectives.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Draws blood in accordance with physician order using appropriate techniques and equipment. Observes patient for any unusual reactions or events, before, during and after procedure. Takes appropriate action following established guidelines
  • Greets patients, processes the laboratory orders, and directs patients to their next station.
  • Collects and delivers specimens for analysis, using appropriate or specified equipment for collecting and handling specimens. Ensures proper labeling and obtains pertinent clinical information on request forms. Follows up on problem resolution as instructed by supervisor
  • Develops, maintains and shares knowledge of various aspects of collecting and processing specimens. Centrifuges blood specimens in test tubes and capillary tubes to separate cells and sediment from blood serum. Coordinates and routes specimens to proper area of the laboratory
  • Responsible for troubleshooting and documenting workflow and specimen collection problems that may arise. Maintain all appropriate phlebotomy logs in a timely manner and based on frequency, such as maintenance logs and temperature logs
  • Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department and interdepartmental objectives and maintain good employee relations. Assists supervisor in preparing and evaluating daily staff assignments. Assists supervisor in staff training and competency assignments.
  • Prioritizes work and provides prompt and efficient service. Provides oversight over section activities on weekends. Assists with the preparation of schedules for assigned activities on the weekends. Participate on special projects and teams
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Minimum Education:High School or equivalent (GED)
  • Minimum Experience:Three to five years of experience as a competent phlebotomist

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • California phlebotomy technician license required
  • Adult CPR through the American Heart Association

Additional Information:

  • Day shift: 07:00am- 03:30pm (subject to change)
  • Pay rate: $24.41/hr - $30.52/hr - $36.62/hr

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
