Position Summary

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Engagement & Programming Sr. Manager, reporting to the Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and SVP, Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer, advances City of Hope’s mission to be a beacon of light for diversity, equity, and inclusion and the democratization of care. This role helps translate the DEI strategy and implementation roadmap into the everyday culture of the organization by partnering with both internal and external stakeholders to establish, monitor, and advance DEI specific priorities, translating intentions and priorities into programs and project plans with key activities, milestones, achievable timelines, accountabilities, and key performance indicators.

The Senior Manager also collaborates with functional leaders, committees, councils, and others to develop and deliver internal and external communications on key DEI initiatives. This role is critical to cultivating an inclusive and equitable environment where everyone is valued and empowered for success.

This role will bring forward thinking strategy to the DEI strategic initiative for impact and goal attainment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of and appreciation for cultural differences and provide insights to encourage and engage others in solving complex problems. This role is both strategic and tactical/operational. This individual will bring and apply best practices and methods, program management, and deep expertise in managing large, multi-year, complex DEI initiatives and transformative programs. This individual will be an influencer, a thought leader, and an agent of change.

This leader needs to be both highly strategic, an excellent collaborator and communication (both written and verbal), process oriented, with a strong sense of meeting deadlines and measuring impact. The incumbent will provide direction and best practices for operationalizing standards and achieving measurable goals to infuse DEI into our DNA at City of Hope.

The characteristics of a strong Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Engagement and Programming Sr. Manager include:

  • A passion and deep commitment to our DEI mission, vision, and strategic imperatives
  • A proven track record in designing and delivering complex DEI programs with multiple projects and workstreams
  • A proven track record in designing and delivering complex large-scale programs with multiple projects and workstreams
  • Ability to establish and run an effective Program Management Office, with includes management of teams, deployment of tools, and expertise in program management processes (such as but not limited to: DMAIC, DFSS, LEAN/Kaizen, Project Online, Earned Value Management, Critical Path Method, Dependency Management, Work Break Down Structure)
  • Ability to drive risk management and mitigation through robust governance and procedures
  • Drives development of workforce analytics reporting, and tools for executive leadership on DEI program performance
  • Ability to effectively and clearly articulate program risks, concerns and issues; is able to effectively and objectively escalate portfolio performance issues
  • Ability to create rigorous business cases and project plans for DEI strategic initiatives
  • Ability to build credibility and trust with key decision makers and be regarded as an expert advisor
  • Inspire and coach DEI team members and enterprise stakeholders to develop capability and engage positively in DEI activities
  • A track record of managing project teams to deliver business objectives, and milestones on time and on budget
  • Ability to identify synergies and interdependencies between portfolio projects and initiatives, and effectively mitigate risks and navigate through interdependencies
  • Maintain project assignments, monitor workloads and resources to meet enterprise objectives
  • Frequently reassess projects within the portfolio scope to ensure projects are carried out according to established plan and budget
  • Partner effectively across the P&ET vertical to deliver collaboratively to the business
  • Measure effectiveness of service offerings and address opportunities and feedback through targeted improvement initiatives
  • Ability to provide direction and leadership, serving as a resource to staff on projects

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Lead action planning based on analysis of engagement survey results (and other data sources) by partnering with senior leaders to create accountability frameworks that amplify the voice of the employee and promote effective response to employee identified areas of opportunity
  • Design and deliver complex programs with multiple projects and workstreams
  • Mobilize internal resources, develop processes and practices, and leverage cross-functional relationships to ensure the DEI work is embedded across all areas of the enterprise
  • Create rigorous business cases and project plans for strategic initiatives
  • Research best practices and benchmark COH progress and impact based on data
  • Interface with external organizations (regional, national, and/or global) to develop strategic partnerships in the areas of best practice sharing, talent sourcing, and pipeline development
  • Effectively and clearly articulate program risks, concerns and issues; is able to effectively and objectively escalate portfolio performance issues
  • Maintain project assignments, monitor workloads and resources to meet portfolio objectives
  • Frequently reassess projects within the portfolio scope to ensure projects are carried out according to established plan and budget

  • Provide key messaging and executive presentations on progress of DEI programs
  • Facilitate the cultivation of an inclusive culture by contributing to the overall DEI communications plan and collaborating with the Comms team to effectively execute
  • Build relationships and provide expert counsel to business leaders at all levels of the enterprise
  • Partner with Talent Development on internal mentorship and sponsorship programs
  • Manage communication with project team members and key partners, both internally and externally
  • Partner effectively across the P&ET vertical, CTCA and TGen entities, etc. to deliver collaboratively to the business
  • Inspire and coach DEI team members and enterprise stakeholders to develop capability and engage positively in DEI activities
  • Manage and coordinate projects and programs as assigned by the Vice President of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion and SVP and Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer.
  • Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, HR Management or related field
  • Must have at least 8 years of experience leading large scale projects and/or programs
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience driving DEI strategy, communications and change strategies for large complex organizations.
  • Compelling track record of leading or influencing the transformation of talent processes across levels
  • Strong experience working optimally and building alignment within a matrixed environment
  • Demonstrated history of effective leadership, building and developing cultural competence, establishing performance standards, and developing an inclusive culture
  • Demonstrated ability to see and mitigate risks preemptively
  • Strategic agility and ability to navigate through and work with different leadership styles
  • Significant communique draft development and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Past experience with guiding the development of workforce analytics metrics, reporting, and tools to enable a coordinated and broad approach for enterprise-level strategies
  • Experience translating data and analytics to develop insights, tell stories, drive decisions, and measure impact
  • Superior project management, interpersonal, analytical, communication and presentation skills
  • Experience with implementing employee engagement projects/programs
  • Experience developing relationships with peers and leaders across an organization
  • Positive relationship skills; able to develop "trusted advisor" status at senior management levels to impact and influence decisions and effective actions
  • Anticipates needs, responds quickly, provides guidance and support, monitors and follows up as required

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience working in a Healthcare and Nonprofit environment
  • PMP Certification
  • Change management experience/certification

Pay Rate: $48.30 - $77.28 / hour
