Job Description

Summary

A research assistant position is available in the Chen laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics. The laboratory has a general interest in understanding the developmental origin of adipose tissue. Specifically, we use mouse genetic, flow cytometry and cell sorting, imaging, and single cell RNA sequencing techniques to investigate the complex lineage trajectories of brown and white adipose tissue during development. We are looking for highly motivated research assistants to perform mouse surgery, cell-based studies, and metabolic metabolic profiling.

Job Duties

  • Assists with laboratory ordering, stocking, and inventory.
  • Performs laboratory data recording, organization, and experimental protocol documentation.
  • Performs mouse colony management, including mouse husbandry, PCR genotyping, mouse weaning, and mouse colony inventory. 
  • Performs primary cell and cell line culturing, including routine cell culture passaging, preservation, and cell differentiation assays.
  • Performs flow cytometrey analysis and sorting, including mouse cell isolation, cell surface marker staining and sorted cells recovery and culturing. 
  • Performs DNA, RNA, and protein extractions, PCR, real-time quantitative-PCR, western blotting, and molecular cloning. 
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills; basic molecular and cellular biology skills, including DNA, RNA, and protein isolation, plasmid construction, PCR amplification, and cell culture; and animal handling and surgery skills.
