Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory is looking for a collaborative leader to join our CIO team supporting over 1400 researchers, 2000 operations staff across its 1700-acre campus. With a diverse, challenging portfolio of technology ranging from legacy applications to experimental city-wide quantum networks, you will be integral to establishing and executing a strategy for “leveling up” our scientific and mission support capabilities for next-generation scientific discovery.

Scope / Key Responsibilities

  • Campus networking and related services (wired, wireless)
  • Enterprise communications (VoIP/PBX, cellular distributed antenna systems, emergency communications, radio spectrum management)
  • Enterprise services including, storage, application hosting, database and on-premise cloud,
  • Endpoint management (Windows/Mac/Linux) for a hybrid workforce
  • Varying levels of oversite for on-site data centers, backup, and disaster and recovery
  • Lab-wide Microsoft Office 365 services, including email/calendar, Teams, and softphone
  • Annual budget creation, management and tracking
  • Chairs the Laboratory IT Advisory Board

New planned initiatives include

  • Building Zero Trust foundational projects and initiatives
  • Beginning a multi-year IPv4-to-IPv6 campus-wide migration
  • Modernizing endpoint (Windows/Mac) device management, including vulnerability management, refresh, and end-user experience
  • Modernizing and simplifying key application delivery platforms

  • Reports to Senior Director and Laboratory Chief Information Officer
  • Department contains (8) managers, 50 staff and contractors
  • Base IT budget of $52MM

Position Requirements

  • Technology infrastructure management role, with comparable scope
  • Skill in management of technical managers and employees
  • Knowledge of best practices and frameworks for managing critical high availability infrastructure, including ITIL, ISO and related standards
  • Strategic, Project planning and Project management skills
  • Knowledge and experience with budget and management practices
  • Influencing at both leadership and operational level
  • Writing business cases; partnering with technical and business leaders
