Job Description

The X-ray Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Photon Source (APS) is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join the Beamline Instrumentation (BI) Group. The BI Group works with APS beamline scientists to provide technical support to the existing synchrotron radiation beamlines and experimental end stations that enable world-class research. The BI Group also supports the specification, design and construction of new and enhanced beamlines that are being built as part of the APS Upgrade. This position will contribute to the development and execution of mechanical designs for beamlines and associated end stations. They will define conceptual principles as well as perform detailed design.

  • Perform engineering analysis.
  • Collaborate on design and controls with other engineers and scientists.
  • Develop and assist in overseeing cost and schedule for projects.
  • Coordinate procurement and manufacturing processes and conduct performance testing.
  • Support the development and implementation of R&D programs for synchrotron instrumentation design, including high-precision opto-mechanical components.

This type of work is usually carried out in collaboration with other members of the group, division, other APS divisions, and the facility users.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of experience, or Master’s Degree and 3+ years or experience, a Doctorate, or equivalent
  • Knowledge and experience in the design, fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of the use and application of mechanical engineering design tools including 2D and 3D CAD (preferably AutoCAD and Creo), FEA (ANSYS or COMSOL), and simulation (MATLAB or Mathematica).
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of thermal design, fluid flow, stress analysis and machine design.
  • Knowledge and experience with the design and implementation of in-situ sample handling environments.
  • Knowledge and experience in the design, implementation and programming of robotic positioning and handling systems.
  • Knowledge of fabrication methods, QC/QA requirements, procedures, and techniques.
  • Skill in working with physicists/engineers/designers/technicians in project groups in order to meet project schedules and performance milestones.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
