Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory is searching for an Industrial Safety Specialist to work within the Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) directorate. As a Safety Program Manager, you will:

  • Ensure the requirements of one or more industrial safety programs are understood and effectively implemented across Argonne’s line management.
  • Interact with and incorporate feedback from Argonne safety committees, management, and other stakeholders in the maintenance, implementation, and assessment of one or more industrial safety programs.
  • Establish measures for safety program effectiveness and track key metrics to ensure that ESH directorate goals are being met.
  • Maintain cognizance of applicable codes and regulations and recommend changes to policies and procedures based on regulatory changes, best practices, assessment findings, and observations.
  • Design and conduct training to increase awareness and understanding of hazards and ways of mitigating risk.

The role of the Industrial Safety Specialist is to support and enable Argonne National Laboratory’s mission of accelerating science and technology to ensure U.S. prosperity and security. You will do this by providing safety guidelines, procedures, and subject matter expertise in a collaborative environment with our world-class scientists, engineers, and researchers. This role provides an autonomous environment in which you will create customizable solutions for unique, challenging problems, in addition to developing policies which following Federal and State regulations, industry standards, and best practices.

Position Requirements

  • Experience conducting inspections in general industry, construction, and/or laboratory settings.
  • Experience reviewing and/or developing work planning and control documents, procedures, or safety basis documents.
  • Experience conducting and/or participating in industrial safety program assessments.
  • Knowledge of DOE, OSHA, and State safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety programs, standards, and applicable best practices.
  • Ability to apply industrial safety knowledge in the development of risk mitigations.
  • Ability to manage multiple safety programs.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training on Machine Guarding and Powered Industrial Trucks; other areas may be assigned based on organizational needs and candidate interests and skill sets.
  • Ability to effectively communicate problems and solutions to workers and senior management, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to make sound judgments and decisions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to provide high quality customer service.
  • Ability to analyze data and make appropriate recommendations to prevent new or recurring accidents.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with oversight and/or management of corporate safety programs related to Machine Guarding and Powered Industrial Trucks; knowledge of Hoisting/Rigging and other industrial safety aspects is desirable.
  • OSHA authorized instructor credential is desirable; an Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification is highly desirable.
  • Experience implementing 29 CFR 1910 and 29 CFR 1926. Experience implementing 10 CFR 851 is desirable.

The minimum requirements for this level are as follows:

  • Bachelor’s and 4+ years of experience or equivalent
