Job Description

The Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator Facility (ATLAS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is seeking an electrical engineer with circuit design, fabrication, and testing experience.  ATLAS is the world’s first heavy ion superconducting linear accelerator, and for over three decades has operated as a user facility to explore the frontiers of nuclear physics and applications.

The successful candidate will work with a collaborative team of physicists, engineers, and technicians to develop devices to manipulate and deliver heavy ion beams for experiments.  This position requires a strong understanding of the foundations of electronics design.  In general, the candidate will be involved with the design, fabrication, and operation of electronics systems needed to accelerate, focus, and deliver high energy, heavy ion beams for nuclear physics research.  This position is responsible for the full product life cycle – from design, prototyping, development, and operation to troubleshooting, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair.

Systems and components associated with this position include:

  • Regulated DC power supplies – high voltage (up to 200 kV) and/or high current (up to 1000 A)

  • RF Amplifiers (6 - 110 MHz, up to 100 kW)

  • PLC systems

  • Low voltage control circuits

  • Operational amplifiers

  • Low noise and precision analog circuits

As you will be working with a small project team and regularly interacting with operations staff, excellent communication and teamwork skills are essential.  You must be a flexible, results-oriented problem-solver who requires minimal supervision.  Projects can vary greatly from one to the next and the successful applicant must thrive in taking on new challenges.

Required experience

  • Discrete circuit design

  • Proficient use of test and measurement equipment

  • General assembly skills such as PCB soldering and cable assembly

  • Electrical chassis design – enclosure layout, power/thermal management, wiring and panel design

  • System documentation – design criteria, as built drawings, revisions, maintenance records, etc.

  • Safe electrical work practices

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

Preferred experience

  • Electronics simulation tools

  • Particle accelerator systems

  • Resonant RF systems

  • Digital electronics

  • PCB design and layout using standard software tools

This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD2 or RD3) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:

  • RD2: Bachelors and 5+ years, Masters and 3+ years, or a PhD, or equivalent

  • RD3: Bachelors and 8+ years, Masters and 5+ years, or a PhD and 3+ years, or equivalent
