NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs: If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs. What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTEE to join a team conducting research related to measuring and modeling the dynamics of aerosols, colloids, and other reacting systems. The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team to conceive and conduct experimental research to acquire high quality data and collaborate with computational modelers. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Employ light scattering experimental techniques, theories, and models to characterize particulate effluents from fires, + Model aerosol formation and dynamics in reacting systems, + Characterize and model crystallization and other dynamic processes in complex materials with microscopy and other techniques, + Contribute at scientific conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals. Qualifications We Require: + PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Material Science, Applied Math, or other related field + Proven experience/skills in the safe design and operation of laser diagnostics, in-situ aerosol and colloid characterization, multi-angle light scattering (e.g., forward, backward, and side scatter), microscopy, and material characterization + Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences + Leadership and/or mentorship experience in a technical or nontechnical role + Ability to acquire and maintain a DoE L security clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Experimental experience with the operation of combustion chambers, materials used as surrogates for nuclear wastes, setup and operation of commercial aerosol measurement instrumentation + Computer programming for data analysis + Expertise in digital image analysis + Demonstrated ability to work in large, multi-disciplinary teams + Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems including microscale physics + Experience collaborating in multi-organizational environments About Our Team: The Thermal and Reactive Processes department is responsible for conducting research in energetic material response (for assessing safety and performance of weapon components) and thermal processes. The research is used to develop numerical predictive tools that we apply to DOE and DOD customer problems. The department is also responsible for the analysis of thermal processes in weapons systems and related components in normal and abnormal environments.

Security Clearance:
