Job Description

The Quantum and Energy Materials (QEM) group at the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM), Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is looking for a principal engineering specialist who will serve as a primary technical support expert for the QEM group and its users. The CNM is a DOE Office of Science user facility providing researchers from across the globe with world-class expertise and instrumentation for multidisciplinary nanoscience and nanotechnology research. All research and tools support cutting edge science and the user community.

The following are roles and responsibilities that define expectations for this position.  Applications are encouraged from interested and qualified candidates with experience in most but not all bullets below.  The ideal candidate will have experience with ultrahigh vacuum systems and working with cryogens.

Position Requirements

  • Serve as primary custodian for several nanoscience instruments in the QEM likely including, but not limited to, x-ray diffractometers, PPMS, MPMS, etc.; this involves primary responsibility for installation, maintenance, documentation, planning upgrades, training users and managing access for staff and users

  • Provide technical, design, development, and operational support for QEM instruments and experiments, particularly a suite of advanced ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) scanning tunneling microscopes (STM) and surface science tools

  • Most tools supported by this position operate at low temperature.  The candidate should have experience working with cryogens (liquid helium and liquid nitrogen), and will participate in efforts underway for sustainable operation under current helium shortage, such as recovery, re-liquefication, and transitioning tools to closed cycle systems

  • Provide design and development support for custom or modified experimental setups, including possibly engineering, drafting, machining, construction, electronics development, coding for experimental control and data analysis; provide support for facilities and laboratory modifications

  • Help propose and develop the next generation of scientific instrumentation for staff and user science

  • Work with QEM staff members to support instrumentation, facilities and science in writing and maintaining safety and administrative documentation, including standard operating procedures, hazard analyses, service/maintenance contracts, job hazard questionnaires, etc. 

  • Provide support for other required safety and monitoring activities, e.g., laser safety, radiation generating devices, precious materials monitoring, etc.

Qualification and Experience:

The position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years’ experience and is open to Master’s and PhD applicants.
