Job Description

The primary purpose for this position is to provide professional electrical safety support to the Laboratory’s operations and research employees through the development, implementation, and evaluation of the policies and procedures within the Laboratory’s electrical safety program; serve as the Laboratory’s subject matter expert (SME) in electrical safety; may serve as the laboratory’s Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for electrical safety or a Deputy AHJ position; serve on the laboratory’s Electrical Safety Committee; develop and deliver hands-on and classroom electrical safety training; and coordinate the electrical safety program and its implementation. Provide cross-functional support as needed to other aspects of occupational and industrial safety including hazard identification, compliance evaluations, incident investigations, and safety program management, development, and training.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of low and high voltage AC and DC electrical systems and equipment, and the applicable codes and regulations. Knowledge of accelerator-related electrical systems is desirable.
  • Ability to identify and apply appropriate electrical safety principles and controls to research and industrial work project settings.
  • Ability to conduct program audits and assessments, drive continuous improvement, and demonstrate compliance with various regulatory and quality requirements and objectives.
  • Experience supporting electrical incident investigations to include root-cause analysis and corrective action development.
  • Experience and ability to develop and conduct classroom and hands-on electrical safety training, and to provide content and basic instructional design for web-based electrical safety training.
  • Ability to effectively communicate problems and solutions to diverse groups of workers and management, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to influence change, develop safety culture, and provide a collaborative safety service.
  • Ability to make sound judgments and decisions in all situations and develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to analyze data in compliance with current regulations and make appropriate recommendations to prevent new or recurring accidents.
  • Ability to apply computer-based tools to the development of reports and the tracking of findings.
  • Experience assessing electrical hazards and risks in an industrial setting. Experience with electrical hazards associated with designing research and development experiments is highly desired.
  • Experience interpreting and applying various industrial and occupational safety regulations, codes, and standards (eg. 10 CFR 851, 29 CFR 1926, NFPA 70 & 70E, UL & IEEE standards, International Building Code, etc) to challenging, real-world situations.
  • Certification or working toward certification as a Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP) is highly desirable.
  • A professional engineer (PE) license is highly desirable.

This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT4 or PT5) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:

  • PT4: Bachelor’s and 6+ years of experience, or equivalent
  • PT5: Bachelor's and 8+ years of experience, or equivalent
