Tennessee State University, located in Nashville, Tennessee, seeks a visionary, entrepreneurial, and collaborative leader who will play a central role in shaping the success, growth, and future of the College of Engineering and invites applications for the position of Dean. The University has a R2 Research designation and seeks to achieve R1 status.

The Dean of the College of Engineering is responsible for the overall leadership of the College, and will direct, manage, supervise and coordinate the programs and activities of all phases of Engineering. Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean will manage the academic and fiscal aspect of the College, and will develop strategic initiatives and participate in long-term planning and policy setting.

The College of Engineering at Tennessee State University (TSU) is committed to providing the highest scholarly industry-driven curricula and innovation in Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science to meet the growing demand for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) professionals in industry, government, and entrepreneurship. The College currently provides undergraduate degrees in Architectural, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering, as well as Computer Science, and Applied & Industrial Technologies. Degrees are offered at the masters and Ph.D. levels.

The Dean will lead efforts in promoting excellence in research, teaching, student learning, and community engagement by demonstrating an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Job Duties

Provide leadership and overall administration of the College.
Enhances the reputation of Tennessee State University as a outstanding producer of engineers and scientists in the nation.
Develop and implement entrepreneurial initiatives to foster collaboration with industries and businesses.
Guide strategic planning in accordance with the University’s Strategic Plan.
Develop and manage the College’s budget, and maintain accountability to the University in terms of fiscal, personnel, and policy matters.
Engage in fundraising and resource acquisition to meet current and future needs of the College.
Lead the College through the construction of a new state-of-the-art engineering building.
Oversee and participate in efforts to attract and retain world-class and diverse faculty, staff, and students.
Motivate and support high level faculty performance in teaching, scholarship, and service.
Work with faculty and staff to establish equitable workload assignments and task distribution
Supervise staff to maintain efficient and effective office operations.
Oversee planning, curriculum development and evaluation for all academic programs.
Encourage interdisciplinary and collaborative activities among faculty, administrators, and the professional community both internally and externally.
Represent the College to external constituents at local to international levels, including alumni, professionals, researchers, and funding agencies.
Develop and implement entrepreneurial initiatives to foster collaboration with industries and businesses.
Build relationships and effectively represent the College with internal and external partners to include alumni, industry, political leaders and donors.
Demonstrate a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Empower a dedicated and talented workforce to propel the college forward as it continues to develop solutions that advance society.
Drives economic progress and improve the quality of life around the world.
Remain current with the academic and professional trends in the field of engineering.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience

Requires an earned doctorate and a record of distinguished scholarship and teaching requisite for an appointment as a tenured full professor within the College. Must have a minimum of five years of full-time teaching experience in higher education and three years of higher education leadership experience at the Department chair, Dean or equivalent position.

Ability to reconcile differing viewpoints and develop solutions within a shared governance model.
Experience with strategic planning, extramural funding, assessment, instructional technology, and interdisciplinary approaches in education.
Ability to effectively use computer software (Microsoft Office) and other work-related systems
(Banner, E-Learn), etc.
Intellectual vision, high levels of energy, impeccable integrity and other personal qualities that will inspire the College of Engineering community to attain new levels of excellence.
