Job Description

The Department of Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum in the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education at the University of Oklahoma-Norman Campus is pleased to invite passionate, creative, innovative, dynamic individuals with practical and scholarly experience to be part of a robust program and academic community. We are seeking nominations and applications for a full-time (nine-month), tenure-track, assistant professor position in reading/literacy education. We seek candidates who are devoted to the improvement of reading/literacy teaching and learning, well-grounded in current theories of reading/literacy education, and are committed to developing or continuing a research agenda in reading/literacy education.

The responsibilities of the position consist of but are not limited to teaching two courses primarily in reading/literacy education (i.e., reading specialist, early childhood literacy, elementary literacy) and other related courses each regular semester with opportunities to teach during summer months; advising and mentoring graduate students and directing master’s theses with potential for directing doctoral dissertations; assisting in program development and coordination in collaboration with program area faculty; mentoring teaching assistants and/or part-time instructors in reading/literacy education; developing or continuing a productive research agenda in reading/literacy; providing service to the department, college, university, and profession; collaborating with centers and programs within the college and across the university to develop an interdisciplinary research agenda; continuing to build and strengthen partnerships with local PK-12 school districts throughout the Oklahoma City metropolitan area; developing future partnerships with formal and informal learning institutions; and participating in other job-related activities as appropriate.

Required Qualifications: An earned doctorate in reading education, language and literacy education, or a closely related field from an accredited universitythree years of experience teaching reading/literacy in grades PK-6; experience of teaching reading/literacy education courses in college/university settings; and demonstrated ability or potential to conduct research and make scholarly contributions to the field of reading/literacy education.

Desired Qualifications: Eligibility for state licensure as a reading specialist; expertise in teaching early childhood literacy; experience in supervising reading/literacy-related clinical experiences; knowledge of and experience in teaching emergent bilinguals and multilingual learners; experience in teaching reading/literacy education courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels; familiarity with current research and best practices in early childhood and elementary literacy education; experience in or capacity for interdisciplinary collaboration; ability to integrate technology into instruction; demonstrated ability or capacity to obtain external funding in reading/literacy education; and experience in or capacity for advising and/or mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students.

We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute, through their teaching, research, and service, to the excellence of the academic community and who will build collaborative ties with other departments within the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education and the University.
