Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer, the Director of Research will play a critical role in advancing National Brain Tumor Society’s treatment-focused research agenda. Key responsibilities include integrating and managing research projects including funding that are a part of NBTS programs designed to advance medical research and development of promising treatments. As an internal and external research team leader, the role will work with regulatory, academic, and life sciences industry related initiatives as well as collaborate to facilitate patient and caregiver engagement in research. The position will play an important role in developing research strategy and implementing it. The successful candidate will additionally work with teams cross-functionally (Research, Business Development, Development, Finance and Communications) to comprehensively advance program priorities and evaluate opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Lead program development and coordination flowing from strategic direction
- Oversee grants process leading to funding of projects within NBTS overall research funding strategy
- Lead Internal management and workflow prioritization, process and integration for the research department on a day-to-day basis
- Facilitate processes that enable prioritization and balancing of research work
- Demonstrate leadership and scientific advisory and rigor while collaborating closely with internal and external stakeholders and partners
- Serve as a liaison to the NBTS Scientific and Medical Advisory Council
- Provide analysis of the research landscape of the neuro-oncology field bringing forward important results, and facilitate internal staff education
- Serve as scientific advisor to Research Roundtable Program, and public policy work
- Support integration of programmatic activities involving the research department
- Engage and operate internally as well as externally, serving as a representative of NBTS to the public: attending and speaking at conferences, participating in external facing NBTS programs


National Brain Tumor Society is seeking a highly accomplished scientist with a minimum of 7-10 years research experience at a complex life sciences, academic medical, or healthcare nonprofit entity. In addition, the candidate will have demonstrated experience in the following areas:

- Deep scientific rigor and curiosity preferably in the oncology and/or rare disease space
- Detailed understanding of the research process from discovery to clinical research and through
health care delivery.
- Track record of effectively leading to results, multiple projects in matrixed environments
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Ability to adapt to changes, with demonstrated
flexibility to pivot as warranted and needed
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to present to
internal and external audiences
- Understanding of patient and caregiver experience
- Sense of humor and positive, can-do attitude


Bachelor’s Degree required; Ph.D. or equivalent experience required.

- Location: Remote position; primary work location must be in the United States. This role may require occasional travel to national headquarters in the Boston area.
- This is a full-time exempt position, and core hours for the role are 9:00am to 5:00pm EST.
- Travel to headquarters and/or meeting locations by walking, car and/or plane may be required approximately 10% of the time.
- Position may require light physical effort. On-site work is performed in an ADA compliant office environment, and workspace may be shared.
- Must be able to sit or stand in a stationary position for extended periods of time. This role frequently involves using a computer for long periods of time.
