Job Description

State University Administrator 1
Train and supervise departmental student lab assistants (work-study), undergraduate and graduate.
• Supervise the set-up, testing, and tear-down of undergraduate laboratories
• Responsible for the smooth running of laboratories for courses with multiple lab sections; will carry out all necessary tasks in the event of student help being unavailable.
• Supervise the preparation of course materials (including solutions and media) for biology lab classes
• Responsible for communication with departmental chair, faculty, graduate assistants, and undergraduate assistants regarding lab, lab exam, and lab review set-up/tear-down, and lab clean-up
2. Maintain and inventory all laboratory and demonstration equipment used in
undergraduate and graduate instruction. Decide whether equipment is to be repaired inhouse
or outside the College of Science and Technology.
• Supervise repairs and construction of all equipment when repairs must be made with university
personnel or outside personnel at the present location of the equipment (i.e. equipment too large
to be sent out).
• Maintain records and supervise shipping of equipment that cannot be repaired in-house. Test
equipment after it has been returned.
• Perform routine maintenance on and calibration of mechanical, optical, and electronic
equipment in the biology labs, including follow-up on items sent out for repair.
• Submit Work Orders for in-house repair and maintenance of laboratory equipment and space.
3. Serve as curator of collections in biology labs (skeletal collections, preserved and dried
specimens, models, data-acquisition systems, software).
• Supervise and maintain teaching labs and their associated equipment.
• Maintain a database of all associated equipment.
• Supervise the use of, and assist in the maintenance of living specimens such as frogs, fish,
worms, crayfish, and small mammals.
• Maintain cultures of microorganisms as needed.
• Maintain the contents of refrigerators and freezers associated with teaching labs.
• Assist in the maintenance of the departmental greenhouse.
4. Supervise the departmental microscope inventory.
• Provide routine maintenance (e.g. bulbs, fuses), and cleaning.
5. Supervise the purchasing of all lab supplies and equipment across all three campuses
– Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield.
• Maintain a database of purchases and inventory.
• Submit and receive orders; store received material.
• Drive to vendors to purchase supplies as needed.
6. Serve as Lab Safety coordinator.
• Serves as a member of the College of Science and Technology Safety Committee
• Coordinate disposal of chemical wastes, preservatives, and medical wastes with the College’s
designated waste disposal officer.
• Assist in the departmental compliance with federal safety regulations, and assuring compliance
with appropriate controlled substance regulations.
• Instruct faculty and students on lab safety.
• Report all discrepancies to the chair of the department.
• Maintains chemical inventory for the department – includes, but is not limited to, updating
inventory software, assisting with disposal of old chemicals, logging in new chemicals that arrive,
and working with faculty to insure chemical inventory is up-to-date
7. Complete other projects, assume additional duties, and attend department meetings as
assigned by the chair of the Department.
• Assist, as needed, with routine departmental activities, such as assisting with recruitment and retention events.
• Assist, as needed, faculty research activities.
• Assist, as needed, graduate and undergraduate student research activities.
8. Acquire the training required to fulfill the abovementioned duties.

DECISION MAKING
Determine what supplies are needed for the semester in the laboratory and then research the best source according to price, availability and quality. Determine a delivery date of the supplies. Decisions on large purchases are made at a department level. Involved with the Graduate Coordinator in evaluation and placement of Graduate Assistants.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
Research the best price for laboratory equipment and supplies
SUPERVISORY RESPONBILITY
Assign and check the work of undergraduate student workers and graduate student workers in any semester.
