Job Description

When the work you do every single day has a crucial impact on the lives of others, every effort, every detail, and every second matters. This shared culture of happiness, passion, and dedication pulses through Cedars-Sinai, and it’s just one of the many reasons why we rank as one of the top hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

When you join Cedars-Sinai, you become part of a team that is at the forefront of medical advancements. Working alongside physician-scientists and researchers, you will be a part of life-saving medical and scientific breakthroughs

Are you ready to be a part of breakthrough research?

Working independently and partnering with the Principal Investigator and other Research Scientist, the Research Fellow will perform routine and sophisticated laboratory procedures throughout the training period. Examine and interprets data. May assist in preparation of grant proposals. Participates in publications and presentations as author or co-author. Not responsible for generating grant funds.

The Marbán Laboratory focuses on two disease themes. The first improves on the long-standing interest of Eduardo Marbán, MD, PhD, in the molecular basis of excitability to create novel, biologically based treatments for cardiac arrhythmias.

The Marbán Lab was the first to create a de novo biological pacemaker, work that is now proceeding toward first-in-human clinical testing. The laboratory is also developing extracellular vesicles as therapeutic agents for refractory ventricular tachycardia.

The second broad category of research in the Marbán Laboratory is in cell therapy and regenerative medicine, which the team has pursued for 16 years. The Marbán Lab was first to isolate and characterize a type of adult progenitor cell known as cardiosphere-derived cells (CDCs), which are now in advanced clinical trials. The first manuscripts defined the engraftment, differentiation and functional benefit of CDCs in murine and porcine prototype of myocardial infarction. Subsequently, the work has gone from proof of concept through completion of five clinical trials in patients with heart failure and/or Duchenne muscular dystrophy. These trials include ALLSTAR (the ALLogeneic Heart STem Cells to Achieve Myocardial Regeneration trial for moderate heart failure after myocardial infarction) and HOPE-Duchenne (the Halt cardiomyOPathy progrEssion in Duchenne muscular dystrophy trial). Two additional clinical trials of allogenic CDCs—Regress-HFpEF (Regression-Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction trial for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction) and ALPHA (ALlogeneic CDCs for Pulmonary Hypertension therApy)—are ongoing.

In the process of characterizing CDCs, the laboratory has shown that the method of benefit is largely indirect, mediated by the secretion of extracellular vesicles (exosomes). CDC exosomes are currently being developed as next-generation therapeutic contenders for a variety of clinical indications. A major effort currently in the lab is mining the contents of CDC exosomes to identify defined noncoding RNA species, which may themselves be viable therapeutic contenders. Work in the lab spans from mechanistic discovery science through sophisticated clinical trial design and analysis, a continuum to which trainees are rigorously exposed.

We are actively seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist/Research Fellow who will work independently and partner with the Principal Investigator and other Research Scientists. In this role, you will perform routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period and you may develop, adapt, and implement new research procedure and protocols. Will survey and interpret data and may assist in preparation of grant proposals. Participates in publications and presentations as author or co-author. You will not be accountable for generating grant funds.

Essential job duties and responsibilities:

  • May assist in preparation of grant proposals, but is not responsible for generating grant funds.
  • May participate in publications and presentations as author or co-author.
  • Designs and performs experiments. Will keep appropriate experimental records and documentation and inspect the results with the Principal Investigator.
  • May develop, adapt, and implement new research delivery and protocols.
  • Inspect, interpret, summarize, and compile data.
  • Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period.
  • Handle and maintain equipment and instruments

Education:

  • Doctorate (MD, PhD, VMD, or DDS) in an area directly related to field of research specialization is required.

Experience:

  • Works independently on research plans designed by a mentor (typically the PI) within area of specialization.
  • Acquires detailed scientific and theoretical knowledge of research plans and objectives during one to five (1-5) year post-doctoral appointment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform experimental protocols and procedures, including detailed data collection, analysis, operation and preservation of specialized equipment.
