As a Phlebotomist Technician Clerk, you will care for patients by preparing, performing, and delivering specimen collections. In addition, you will provide clerical support by registering and coordinating patient appointments. A Phlebotomist Technician Clerk is responsible for providing efficient venipuncture and micro collection techniques. Your primary duties will include:

- Collecting biological specimens.

- Performing clerical duties.

- Preparing samples for testing.

  • Performs clerical/registration duties such as assisting with patient registration, addressing patient concerns, and coordinating appointment schedules. Collects demographic information from patients, including insurance or payment information.
  • Collects biological specimens by various appropriate techniques such as venipuncture and micro collection techniques following all department and safety policies/procedures. Observes patient for adverse effects and reports immediately to supervisor.
  • Prepares samples for testing. Verifies patient demographics, test information, sample identification and specimen type. Clarifies any discrepancies.
  • Performs limited laboratory procedures per established procedures. Evaluates validity of test results using quality control standards and instrument function checks.
  • Identifies and accessions specimens using appropriate computer hardware and software, transports specimens with requisitions to appropriate areas.
  • Answers incoming calls and assists or directs caller to appropriate personnel. Handles calls to and from physician's offices and other departments regarding patient information, orders, testing or results as required.
  • Maintains accurate records regarding the collection and collation of data, including number of patients seen and productivity reports.
  • Communicates with other personnel politely and promptly regarding patient information. Communicates unusual tests requests/questions to teh Coordinator.
  • Ensures that appropriate levels of inventory of supplies are maintained by submitting requests to the supervisor. Receives supplies and expendables, labels appropriately and distributes to appropriate storage/work areas.
  • Maintains work areas in a neat, clean and orderly condition.
  • Attends inservices, continuing education/training programs, and meetings to keep current with new techniques, procedures, policies, equipment, and safety practices. Completes required competency assessment/testing.
  • Assists in training and/or orientation of new staff, students, and residents.
  • Follows system and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of ID badge, safety, and patient satisfaction.
  • Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure. Maintains required BLS.
  • Other duties as assigned


Education:

  • High school graduate or the equivalent. Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program or similar formal training program preferred.


Certifications:

  • BLS required within 90 days of hire.


Complexity of Work:

  • Maintains competencies specific to patient population served.
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment and procedures. Proficient in the use of PC software applications. Strong typing and data entry skills. Ability to communicate test results and other information verbally and in writing to physician and other staff. Ability to travel from site to site as required. Strong interpersonal communication skills required.


Work Experience:

  • One year experience with specimen collection and laboratory techniques and procedures. Previous experience with patient registration and insurance billing preferred.


Physical Requirements:

  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity sufficient to operate equipment requiring fine adjustment.


Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
