Job Description

The Data Science and Learning Division at Argonne National Laboratory has an opening for a term software developer to work on the Braid Project. The overarching goal of the project is to research and develop advanced distributed computing, data management, and control methods to enable policy-driven automation of processes used to collect, analyze, organize, and learn from large and complex scientific data.

This position will help to prepare several of these tools for deployment. Additionally, the position will apply novel techniques to interdisciplinary problems integrating large-scale computing installations with experimental physical science systems such as the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne or other sites. The position will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team in computing, information technology, and research scientists. This is a one year term position, with a possibility of extension depending upon availability of funds.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum undergraduate or masters degree in Computer Science, Math or Engineering.
  • Experience with more than one programming language, proficiency in Python and Linux, and a willingness to learn rapidly on the job. 
  • Effective communications kills to communicate and collaborate with computer scientists and software engineers, and occasionally also with researchers in various science disciplines collaborating with Braid.  
  • An interest in assisting with publishing scholarly papers and guiding student or junior developer work. 
  • The preferred candidate will have experience and expertise in scalable computing, big data, machine learning, databases, and/or the relevant physical sciences.
