If so, you can join our dynamic team by being selected as an Atmospheric Science Postdoctoral Appointee! We are seeking hardworking and dedicated applicants with an interest in developing and applying atmospheric and earth science measurements to scientific and engineering applications relevant to Sandia’s diverse mission space. Sandia is currently exploring a variety of applications for this work which involves various projects. In this role, the postdoc will work in a growing, dynamic team to help design and test scientific instrumentation and collect data using a large, tethered aerostat/balloon flights for atmospheric and climate science research missions. The selected candidate will be a key member on a team of scientists, engineers, technologists, and support personnel that conducts scientific field studies. You will be involved in both the development of instrumentation and measurement methods along and subsequent scientific analysis. You will also be heavily involved in balloon deployments at varied locations around the country, so travel up to 16 weeks per year is required for this position. On any given day, the selected applicant may be called on to: + Develop atmospheric and balloon instrumentation and measurement systems + Operate tethered balloon systems and instrumentation in the field + Conduct data analysis; atmospheric and laboratory-based measurements of ambient conditions including meteorological variables and aerosol/gas phase concentrations + Collaborate with highly motivated researchers on challenging research questions using innovative measurement techniques, and + Present your work within leading publication and conference venues The following link highlights the ongoing work for this team
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3u07giBLAE Qualifications We Require: + PhD in an Atmospheric Science, Earth Sciences, Civil/Environmental/Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or a related field + Experience in atmospheric dynamics or physical processes, atmospheric instrumentation or measurements and data analysis + Computer languages used for atmospheric modeling and analysis (C, C++, Fortran, Python, Julia, R, Matlab) + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance Selected applicants will be required to pass a Job Placement Assessment before beginning the job to ensure that they can perform the essential physical requirements, with or without accommodations. Qualifications We Desire: One or more of the following: + Experience with balloon systems or un-manned aerial vehicles (UAV) + Proven experience with MATLAB, LabView or SolidWorks + Experience in atmospheric turbulence or aerosol + Experience with component programming such as Arduino, Teensy or Raspberry Pi + An ability to work independently in multi-disciplinary team environments + Experience with surface imaging from airborne platforms + Experience with 3D printing + Experience with conducting scientific field deployments + Excellent written and verbal communication and strong interpersonal abilities + Desire to perform in a dynamic environment and demonstrated interest and/or experience in service to the nation About Our Team: 8913 Atmospheric Sciences The staff in the Atmospheric Sciences Department at Sandia National Labs have expertise in atmospheric measurements and modeling. Technical activities cover the spectrum from theory to application, including algorithm development, computer modeling, data inversion, instrumentation and measurement systems development, field demonstration, field campaign execution, and field site management. Particular expertise exists in the measurement and modeling of atmospheric processes in the Arctic including the use of un-manned aerial vehicles such as small, fixed wing and rotary aircraft and tethered balloons, as well as the use and cold hardening of measurement systems such as radar and lidar. The department serves as a Laboratories resource for atmospheric sensing expertise.
