Job Description

Summary
The Department of Biology at the University of Portland invites applications for adjunct positions to teach Foundations of Biology (BIO 205) in the upcoming semester with possible continuance in the future.

Bio 205 provides introductory principles of biology at the cell and molecular level for nursing majors. The instructor will: be available to teach 2 sections of the course with each class section requiring 3 contact hours per week, maintain availability to meet regularly with students, meet weekly with undergraduate workshop leaders and the faculty who teaches the other sections and participate in department orientation and training.

Adjunct instructors are hired on a per semester basis, and teach assigned Department of Biology courses, not to exceed 12 contact course hours across the University in an academic year. This part-time position has no benefits (other than sick leave benefits consistent with Oregon requirements).

Responsibilities
Specific Duties

The BIO 205 lecture course meets for one hour three times per week. Topics include biochemistry and metabolism, macromolecular structure and function, cell structure and function, and molecular and Mendelian genetics. Instructors are expected to coordinate with other faculty teaching sections of the same course, use a common textbook, follow a general course syllabus of topics, provide formative and summative evaluations for students, work closely with undergraduate workshop leaders, and engage students in active learning practices.

General Description of Duties

Coordinate course instruction and other related areas with faculty who teach other sections of the same course to ensure consistency.

Coordinate with undergraduate workshop leaders and faculty member responsible for providing content to ensure the topics covered during workshops are aligned with lectures. This includes attending BIO387 weekly classes to update the undergraduate workshop leaders on lectures and the review concepts.

Adhere to University and College policies and processes related to class instruction, including but not limited to: syllabus requirements and to the commonalities agreed upon by consensus of the faculty who teach sections of the course. Submit syllabus and office hours schedule to departmental office manager within the first two weeks of classes.

Be available for regular student meetings (at least 2 office hours /week per course outside of scheduled class time).

Teach course using evidence-based instructional practices that also align with the Biology Department’s teaching philosophy and active-learning pedagogy.

Conduct regular student assessments and provide timely graded feedback, including homework, quizzes, and exams. Online homework system use may be required in addition to the required Moodle system of course support.

Submit midterm grades and final grades, as required, on time. Final exams and gradebooks must be kept on file and made available upon request for one academic year. Chair must have access to online gradebook and course materials.

Provide time for students to complete course evaluations at the end of the semester.

Yearly self-evaluations are expected for returning adjuncts and due by last day of semester pay period contract.

Conduct oneself in a professional manner, including maintaining a respectful and inclusive classroom environment that fosters collegial interactions.



Requirements
Education & Experience

Required: Master's degree in cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, or a related field

Required: Teaching experience

Preferred: Ph.D. in cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, or a related field

Preferred: Experience teaching undergraduate courses in cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, or a related field
