Postdoctoral Fellow - Genomic Medicine Department
Job posting number: #7084585
Posted: September 2, 2021
Application Deadline: October 2, 2021
Job DescriptionA Postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Genomic Medicine, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, United States. This position reports to Hussein A. Abbas, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor in Department of Leukemia and Genomic Medicine.
We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow with computational background to work on readily available data from single cell sequencing platforms to conduct immunogenomic profiling focusing on leukemia. Our goal is to apply innovative immunogenomics and bioinformatics approaches to better understand leukemogenesis, resistance mechanisms to chemo and immunotherapy, and deep profiling of the cellular & functional heterogeneity of leukemic cells, and the diverse cell populations within the tumor immune microenvironment. We will primarily be utilizing patient samples from leukemia clinical trials allowing us to interrogate translational questions that have immediate patient impact.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will have great opportunities to collaborate with diverse groups of physician scientists, laboratory scientists and computational biologists at MD Anderson Cancer Center. The postdoc will have a primary appointment in Genomic Medicine Department with optional appointment in Department of Leukemia.
Individuals with a PhD and a background in computational biology, bioinformatics, data science or a related field are encouraged to apply. Background in computational biology, proficiency in programming (e.g. R, Python etc.), familiarity and working with high-performance computing and biologic sciences are preferred. We will provide a nurturing environment to guide and mentor trainees throughout their training to navigate these different areas.
Interested applicants should send their CV and names of 2 Referees to Dr. Hussein Abbas ([email protected]) with the subject line entitled “Postdoctoral Fellow - Application – Applicant’s Name”.
Hussein A. Abbas, MD, PhD is a tenure-track assistant professor in Department of Leukemia and Genomic Medicine at M D Anderson Cancer Center. He is a physician scientist with background in clinical medicine, computational and bioinformatics and laboratory biology focusing on leukemia. Our recent work (Abbas et al Nat Comms (2021), Abbas et al Blood Adv (2021), Abbas et al Front Onc (2021) & Abbas et al Front Imm (2021)) demonstrated the plasticity of the T cell compartment in leukemias, the complex interaction of AML cells with their environment, and the distinct metabolic states of AML. Building on these findings, our lab is interested in further understanding the mechanisms of resistance of leukemia to chemo and immunotherapy that can guide management of leukemia patients and improving their outcomes. We are leveraging high-throughput tools such as scRNA, scATAC, scTCR, scBCR, among others in patients on clinical trials to address these questions.
Consideration of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
Stipend support will follow the NIH Kirschstein-NRSA stipend levels level for the appropriate PGY.
