Plan and conduct comprehensive applications/web development for complex projects; typically work as part of a team to implement complex business solutions. Perform expert coding: design, develop code at an expert level, and manage development projects, teams, programs. May manage multiple projects simultaneously.
The Application Developer works across the Harvard Medical School’s Information Systems team to support, enhance, and build business web applications. The Application Developer will contribute towards Harvard Medical School’s digital transformation by working on highly complex projects that support cross-business domain needs and integration. The Application Developer will be directly involved in planning, implementation, management of technical code, components, and integrations/APIs that support Harvard Medical School’s Administration, Teaching and Learning, and Research mission.
The Application Developer must have demonstrated success in the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), leading development of technical solutions that meet business requirements, participate in the strategic planning for the application portfolio and agile scrum cadences.
The Application Developer will be enthusiastic about approaching and solving problems in new and innovative ways within an ever-changing, cross-functional, and matrixed environment to deliver new business applications that enable the success of the school. Success will be measured by defining and delivering scalable, extensible, and re-usable applications.
Technical developer, build web-based applications, develop interfaces with custom and SaaS applications for use by the HMS community.
Lead development activities with IT application owners and business stakeholders to ensure business and technical requirements are understood and delivered
Collaborate with HMS IT and Harvard University IT (HUIT) dev ops, infrastructure, and data warehouse and other application teams to design and document technical solutions, application architecture, data modeling, and integration of data services.
Work in an agile development environment, participate in the application development life cycle, and successfully deliver projects and ongoing enhancements through release management and change management processes using tools such as GitHub
Perform unit testing and review functional test scripts to ensure that appropriate testing occurs to meet all requirements
Work with HMS and HUIT security officers to ensure that applications adhere to security policies. Develop and use relevant industry standards and domain information models to satisfy functional and technical requirements and achieve compliance with IT best practices and Harvard University IT standards and policies
Ensure that applications have sophisticated scheduling tools, error handling, audit, and monitoring of data jobs and services. Participate in application audits when necessary.
Participate in design reviews and identify mitigations for technical risks
Function as a Technical Lead and mentor peer developer resources

Contribute to creation and maturing of software development best practices and new technologies
Draw on relationship and technical skills to act as technical liaison to internal and external clients and to mentor junior staff
Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct
Minimum of five years' post-secondary education and/or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Knowledge of information technology applications, processes, software, and equipment
Highly specialized knowledge of a specific technology
Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
BS in Computer science or software engineering, or equivalent. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of the education requirement.
Excellent communication, analytical, problem-solving, data analysis skills required
Certificates and Licenses
Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred
Work is performed in an office setting
