Job Description

The Postdoctoral Appointee will be part of a R&D group conducting research supporting the development of advanced molten salt technologies applicable to molten salt reactors (MSRs) and concentrated solar power (CSP) systems. The research will involve investigations of heat transfer, mass transfer, and multiphase flow phenomena in flowing, high-temperature molten chloride and fluoride salts. Specific duties will include:

  • Design, development, and operation of molten salt flow systems.
  • Design and development of process diagrams and equipment for salt synthesis and purification systems
  • Operation and analysis of experiments related to heat transfer and mass transfer under flowing salt conditions
  • Development of process monitoring and control technologies applicable to molten salt systems
  • Measurements of fundamental salt properties

In order to assist with the above research activities, the applicant will be expected to have considerable skills and experience with one or more of the following areas:

  • Considerable knowledge of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and mass transfer.
  • Considerable skill in devising and performing experiments, using research equipment and instruments, and evaluating test results.
  • Considerable skill in process design and engineering operations.
  • Good laboratory skills with high-temperature equipment and controlled atmosphere systems demonstrated through prior research activities that can be applied to safe handling of hazardous materials.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Other:  To perform the essential functions of this position, successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contracts. This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering or a related field at the Ph.D. degree level with zero to three years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.
