Job Description

With guidance, assess the safety and risk associated with nuclear facilities.

 

The activities associated with this position include:

  • Development of plant risk models, including the use of Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA)
  • Assess component and system reliability, including the performance of Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEAs)
  • Develop plant system models, including the use of system codes
  • Assess the consequences of severe accident scenarios, such as the potential release of radioactive material
  • Participate in safety reviews and licensing/authorization activities of nuclear facilities.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and the Laboratory community through research reports, project presentations, and other regular channels.
  • Analyze data and document results in the form of monthly reports, progress reports to sponsors, and technical publications and presentations; prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, attend and make presentations at scientific meetings.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of pertinent literature.
  • Develop new ideas, concepts, and/or research proposals to contribute to programmatic growth.

The applicant will be expected to have:

  • Knowledge of one or more specialized areas of nuclear engineering or reliability engineering.
  • Knowledge of risk and reliability principles, theories, and practices.
  • Skill in the conception, design, and evaluation of innovative approaches and solutions to quantitative problems.
  • Skill in the use of computers and in the analysis of computational results.
  • Experience with risk and reliability analysis software, such as CAFTA, SAPHIRE, or RiskSpectrum (preferred).
  • Knowledge of nuclear systems and nuclear system modeling and simulation (preferred).
  • Working proficiency in a modern coding language (preferred).
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

 

This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, reliability engineering, or a related field at the Ph.D. degree level with zero to three years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical experience. Other: To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) Green Card, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract. Illegal drug testing as defined in 10 CFR 707.4 and a background investigation will be required prior to employment.
