General summary/purpose:

The position will be working on innovative gene therapies for NF1 and NF2. The ideal applicant should have basic knowledge of husbandry, handling, and health care of mice in accordance with experimental protocol and Animal Welfare Act/Regulations. Skills and knowledge relevant to scientific animal research are beneficial. In addition, this individual conducts scientific procedures in accordance with study protocols, runs lab tests and completes measurements as assigned, identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects and maintains appropriate documentation associated with all job assignments. This person may also take on responsibilities for management of the laboratory and maintenance of protocols, as delegated by the PI.



Duties & Responsibilities:

Performs laboratory experiments using techniques such as molecular biology, biochemistry, and tissue culture
Recognizes when animals are sick, distressed or otherwise abnormal and communicates these observations to the PI.
Conducts scientific clinical observations and disease outcome assessments (e.g. lameness, behavior, respiration, fecal consistency, central nervous system affects, etc.).
Records all scientific information on documents provided with study protocols or standard department forms as appropriate.
Conducts sample collection pre- and post-mortem in accordance with study protocols and direction of Investigator.
Performs research lab tests and experiments. Follows established procedures and protocols, utilize appropriate techniques to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments.
Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication.
Responsible for routine operational activities such as: maintenance of animal protocols, biosecurity, hazardous shipping, and controlled drug inventories at direction of the PI.
Performs preventative maintenance of equipment.

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, neuroscience or related field

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
