You could be the Postdoctoral Appointee that we are looking for to work in the area of in-situ transmission electron and scanning electron microscopy. You would study the role of ion irradiation, ion implantation and general ion beam modification on the microstructure and subsequent mechanical properties of advanced nanostructured metal alloys. You would work in an outstanding team of 6-8 researchers focusing on the basic science of deformation, fracture, fatigue, and related degradation mechanisms in thin film metals. While the position will be experimentally focused, you'll collaborate with materials modeling specialists at the atomistic and mesoscale. + You have, or are pursuing a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field and possess a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) + Outstanding interpersonal skills as evidenced by a record of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at professional scientific conferences + Experience with materials characterization and electron microscopy + Experience with experimental research and technique development + Able to acquire and maintain a DOE security clearance

+ Experience in in-situ SEM and TEM experiments, such as, in-situ heating, irradiation, implantation, and/or mechanical property testing + Experience using TEM for tomography, procession electron diffraction (PED), ultra-fast or dynamic TEM development (DTEM), or other advanced techniques + Interest in exploring relationships between processing-structure-properties in nanostructured metals + Experience in using electron microscopy for diffraction analysis and defect analysis + Experience testing a multitude of material systems, with emphasis on in-situ mechanical testing capabilities and an eagerness for technique development + Experience in a range SEM and TEM sample preparation techniques + Theoretical knowledge base in thermodynamics and kinetics + Strong background in mechanical properties, transmission electron microscopy, defect analysis, and far-from-equilibrium processes + Strong publication record

Department Description:

Department 1881 – Nanostructure Physics – is one of two departments at Sandia that are a part of The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT). CINT is a Department of Energy/Office of Science Nanoscale Science Research Center operating as a national user facility dedicated to establishing the scientific principles that govern the design, performance, and integration of nanoscale materials. Through its core facility in Albuquerque and gateway facility at Los Alamos, CINT provides users from academia, industry, and government labs, open access to the tools and expertise needed to explore the continuum from scientific discovery to the integration of nanostructures into the micro- and macro world. Security Clearance:
