Job Description

The Packaging Certification and Life Cycle Management Group in the Decision and Infrastructure Sciences Division (DIS) of Argonne National Laboratory solicits applicants to fill a research and development postdoc position in the area of engineering physics. The successful candidate will perform applied research and technology development including functional materials for various important-to-safety structures, systems and components, sensors, testing and process modeling and simulations, and system integration and performance evaluations. We are looking for a motivated, recently graduated candidate looking for challenges in joining a dynamic research group as part of DIS.

Education Minimum (if different from career classification): This level of knowledge is typically achieved through formal education in engineering physics, materials science or a related field at the Ph.D. degree level with 0 to 1 year of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience.

 

A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork. 

  • Experience in functional materials such as cellular foam for thermal insulation, honeycomb composite for impact absorption, elastomeric and/or metallic O-ring for sealing and containment, high-performance concrete for radiation shielding, etc.
  • Able to use advanced techniques, experimental and analytical, for process and structure evaluations; experience with high-performance computing and CFD modeling (STAR-CCM and/or OpenFOAM) is a plus.
  • High level of scientific creativity and a strong aptitude for problem-solving
  • Self-starter that can carry out tasks with minimal oversight.
  • Team oriented; willing to share with, listen to and help others.
