Job Description

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division (CSE) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral appointee to conduct research on lithium air and lithium sulfur batteries with specific emphasis on the fundamental understanding of the cell chemistry and improvement of the electrochemical performance via additive-based methods.

With mentoring, you will:

  • Focus on enhancing the OER/ORR for lithium air batteries by designing OER/ORR catalyst and Li2S activating agents and composite design.
  • Probe the above systems using a combination of electrochemical and in-situ/ex-situ characterization techniques (XAS, XRD, XFM, USAXS/SAXS/WAXS, UV-VIS) for understanding the fundamental cell mechanism.
  • Be responsible for designing the experiments, evaluating the results, and data interpretation.

We expect you to have:

  • Knowledge and skills in lithium air and lithium sulfur battery fabrication, assembly, and testing.
  • Well-rounded understanding of numerous battery technologies, while also possessing a deep understanding of lithium sulfur and air electrochemistry material design with the ability to propose and demonstrate novel solutions to address existing issues and improve the performance of lithium sulfur/Li2S and lithium air/Li2O2 batteries.
  • Experience performing and analyzing differential electrochemical mass spectrometer (DEMS) is mandatory.
  • Skills in surface, structural, and mechanical characterization techniques including USAXS/SAXS.WAXS, UV-VIS, XFM, XAS, SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, Raman, XPS, EPR, and substantial beamline experiences in synchrotron-based X-ray (such as, APS) techniques with consideration for beam damage.
  • Skills in relevant field of electrochemistry including CV, EIS, electro-deposition, interpretation of potentiostatic hold (Li2S deposition current and shuttle current) and GITT.
  • Skills in management of data acquisition and instruments.
  • Data processing skills, evaluation, and interpretation are required with high-level of proficiency in MATLAB and Origin, and proficiency in Athena/XAS viewer, Artemis, GSE mapviewer, and Igor software.
  • High level of proficiency in manuscript design and drafting with little guidance is a must.
  • The applicant should have obtained a Ph.D. in chemical engineering within the last three years.
