Job Description

The High Energy Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position to attack the computational challenges that experimental HEP will face in the very near future.

The Argonne group has significant responsibilities in the operation and development of core software frameworks for HEP experiments in particular the Input/Output software and event data storage for ATLAS. We are responsible for maintaining this software, including its migration to a multithreaded framework. This knowledge will serve as stepping stone to take on similar scope work in future experiments such as DUNE. The group is also heavily involved in High Performance Computing development and has strong ties to Argonne’s Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF).

The successful applicant will be collaborating with scientists from high energy physics experiments to develop software applications for future Exascale architectures, particularly the first Exascale computer, Aurora, which will be sited at Argonne. Because of their high level of parallelism and use of compute accelerators, writing software for these new architectures requires special approaches and innovative thinking. Especially data layout, storage and transfer requires in-depth analysis and thoughtful design.

We expect you to have:

  • A doctorate degree in experimental particle physics within three years of the start of the appointment.
  • Programming expertise in C/C++, Python, Fortran, or another scientific programming language.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Input/Output and data persistence and object stores.
  • Prior experience with ROOT software is desirable, but not mandatory.
  • Experience with parallel computing, including MPI, OpenMP, or CUDA is desired.
  • Knowledge of popular Machine Learning toolkits (Tensorflow, PyTorch) is desirable.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Questions can be addressed to Peter van Gemmeren: gemmeren@anl.gov

Applicants should apply directly to this positing with the submission of a Curriculum Vitae (CV); a list of publications; and arrange to have at least three reference letters send to hep_letters@anl.gov.
